Rings and scope recommendation for Savage Axis?

    Hi all,

I recently purchased a Savage Axis from a fellow Calgunner. It was the rifle only, no scope, but does have scope mounts installed.

Caliber is .223. My intended purpose is plinking and maybe, maybe, hunting if I ever decide to get into hunting. But mainly it'll be a low-cost plinker. So I'm not looking to put premium glass on it. Figure a budget of $200-250. Of course, if I can get away with less money for a scope that nevertheless performs well, I'd prefer that.

For plinking almost any scope will work. For $200-250 you could get a Leupold which would be best for hunting. A Readfield would be my 2nd choice with Burris as 3rd choice.
For other scopes(mostly plinking) a Nikon, Pentax, Simmons, Bushnell, Weaver, Vortex and some others I cannot think of now.
I would stay away from Tasco (Trashco), BSA, Neccar(sp) and such

      Primary arms 4-14x44 mil dot.

Quality rifle scopes including LPVO 1-6x, 1-8x variable power, and long-range optics. Primary Arms ACSS reticles, Vortex, Leupold, and more brands.

      PA 30mm rings

I linked medium rings, but you should take measurements to determine your ring height.

check out Leapers UTG scopes, I like the 4-16x44 compact tactical with side AO mil-dot and illuminated reticle, it comes with medium rings too for picatinny/weaver rails. reasonable price and works great. not a high end scope, but a mid range very good quality scope.

Leapers---A mid range very good quality scope?????

You have never used a quality scope especially in bad weather if that is what you think.

Sorry to bust your bubble but Leapers are not very good quality.

If you were close to me you could see the difference between low, med and high quality scopes since I have the full range covered from BSA to Nightforce.

Agree about Leapers not being a good scope.

I have 6 of them and they all work great, no problems, I have other scopes that cost more and I do like them too, I wish I had the money to buy a Nightforce, but I have to feed the family and pay the bills too, I have a Millet scope on my .30-06, and my Howa mini action 7.62x39 came with a Nikko Sterling scope, but I'm not into the overly expensive scope mainly because I don't have that kind of money to spend on a scope, UTG works for me and I like them, well within my budget and they have great service too.

When the wife got her axis the sales guy gave her I believe weaver bases and rings ..... as it wasn't a package deal.
I think she should have got taller rings as the bolt throw on the axis isn't great
But I stay out of such things unless asked

I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5 - 14X on my Vanguard. I picked it up on sale somewhere for around $250. Also have a Redfield Revolution 2 - 7X on another rifle. It was around $150, but that was a few years back. Both are quality scopes that will last you a long time. I'll second the Burris Fastfire II. It's a nice scope. Also would recommend a Vortex Diamondback. It's in the same price/quality range.

With rifle optics you really do get what you pay for. I can tell you from my own experiences that anything under a hundred bucks is pretty much gonna be junk - Barska, Simmons, Leapers (yep, I had one). You'll have problems with clarity, eye relief, focusing, and/or holding zero. Stick with name brands and get their bottom tier or the next up and you'll be fine.

Cabelas has the Sig Whisky 3 4-12x for $259.99....if you use the various promotions (gift cards/activejunky etc.) you'll cut that price down further.

They also have a Vortex Diamondback 3-12x for $189.99

I've not used either but they seem like good options and well within your price range..both heavily discounted.

I have a different model Sig scope and really like it. I may well pick up the Whisky 3 for another rifle of mine if i can swing the finances.

Don't forget to factor in the price of rings/mount.

ditto above, and add in Burris and Redfield. From that list we use Leopold and a Burris e1 2-7, plus add in a couple from Sightron and hawke. Everything ran in the $200 range except for the Leopolds, which were just over $300. We're happy with all of them.

Buy the best glass you can. I would look at a 3x9x40. It will cover all your plinking & hunting needs.

                            Right now.
You can get a Vortex Diamondback for $199, at either Cabela's or Sportsman's.
                            OR
You can get a Leupold VX1 from Sportsman's for $199.
                            OR
                            You can get a Leupold VX1 for $169, OR a VX2 for $239 at Cabala's.

I run a few Leupold VX2's & VX3's and really like them. Just ordered a VX2 3x9x40 from Cabela's for my daughters new rifle. They have $5 shipping on orders over $99. We will be using Talley rings.
