RPR 6.5 CM - Which Optics?

    Hello,

I recently bought a Ruger Precision Rifle Gen II chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. I will be shooting at local outdoor ranges, with distances of about 600-700 yards. I plan to eventually step up to 1,000 yards at Piru.

I am shopping around for a budget-minded quality long range scope. I am willing to scope up for a good scope but don't want to go overkill either. Also, I can use some recommendations on what is areasonable magnification range for my intended purpose.

Right now, I am considering three scopes:

Vortex Viper HS-T 6-20x50. Priced around $650. Seems to be well liked by a few people online for the same exact setup as mine.

Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25xx50. Priced around $1100. FFP. I would consider the older PSTs, but I do not care for the illuminated reticles.

SWFA SS 3-15x42 Tactical Rifle Scope Kit SFP Mil-Quad. On sale for $499.95. SFP. FFP version is $200 or more.

Any opinions on these scopes? I am certainly open to suggestions as well. Hoping for some good sales this memorial Day weekend.

How do you like the scope? What distances are you shooting at?

Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25x50 of all your choices. You'll be waiting awhile though as its the new hot item.

It's not magnification and range that makes a scope good, its the tracking first, then optical performance. Everything you listed would be more than sufficient for the type of shooting you want to do.

For money and out of those 3, the Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25xx50 is the clear choice.

I've own a 1st Gen PST 6-24x50 along with other PST scopes and it was an excellent scope for the price. I like the refinements in their Gen II, but I haven't seen one in person yet.

I really like SWFA too, and their fixed power classic scopes are awesome, but if you want a variable, look at the SWFA 5-20x50 SS HD. The glass on those scopes would blow everything you have listed out of the water.

If you can afford a Gen II PST you can also look at the SS HD, but that scope has some cons that you should make yourself aware of to see if the compromises are worth it... no free lunch unfortunately.

Thank you guys for the helpful feedback.

Skyline got me thinking and I did a casual search for the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP. I found this one-man company called A & A Optics, and he has very good reviews.

He is selling refurbished Vortex scopes, including the PST 6-24x50 FFP for $670. Considering it comes with the lifetime warranty from Vortex, I'm thinking this may be the way to go. Thoughts?

$670 is a good deal for that scope... I would jump on the one with the EBR-C2 MOA reticle.

I know the Gen II is just around the corner but 1) you won't be seeing any discounts on them for a long time, and 2) you will be in line with everyone else waiting for the latest and greatest.

This is an opportune time to get a Gen 1 at bargain basement prices.

Even if you don't want it down the road you wont have a problem selling and getting your money back.

Thank you EX. I was thinking the same thing value-wise. If I outgrow it, I'm sure I will not be out much. And I am always leery about buying the first batch of anything new.

I'm not familiar with the workings of the EBR-C2 reticle. Why do you prefer that one over the MRAD?

If you can afford it Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60x52.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're doing it all wrong.

A little out of my price range at the moment. Are these new? I never heard of this line until yesterday. Looks like they are specifically for competition shooting. Maybe if I get really serious about shooting long range, I'll consider stepping up to one of these. The lower end scope will get me started at the closer ranges.

Also, anyone have any recommendations on which rings to go with on the 6-24x50 PST on an RPR?

Go with the 6-24x50 then. Vortex makes two single piece cantilever mounts in 30mm. One is just beefier than the other. Easier to mount and level than two rings.

I posted this over on the RPR thread (forgetting to mention the PST line):

Check out the SWFA SS HD 5-20x50. Also consider the Burris XTR II line. Same with the Bushnell Elite Tactical line. A surprising new entry is the Sig Sauer Tango6. Then there's always the Vortex Razor HD Gen II in 4.5-27x56 if you want to spend more. Or you could go crazy with US Optics, Kahles, S&B, March, or Swarovski.

Bushnell has a 25% rebate and Burris has a $100 rebate going on right now.

Awesome, thank you! Didn't even think about the single piece scope mounts. Looks like they have four versions. Maybe one will be on sale this weekend. Lol!

Dang, more options lol! Thanks K1, I had not looked at some of those, and others are very much out of my price range. I'll look through the Burris and Bushnell offerings.
