Looking for opinions on scope options for a 338 Lapua used primarily for long distance target shooting. Don't want to break the bank but want a solid performing scope at a decent price. I tend to lean towards Leopold but would love to hear what others would consider for this caliber.

Give us a price point. Off the top of my head, my top choices without breaking the bank would be:
- Burris XTR II 5-25
- Vortex HD II 4.5-27
- Nightforce SHV 5-20
We can probably narrow the choices down based on how much you're willing to spend.NRA Benefactor Life Member

I'd put any Nikon over a Leupold VX-I anyday. Just because it's a Leupold doesn't mean it's worth the name.Looking for opinions on scope options for a 338 Lapua used primarily for long distance target shooting. On a more serious note, the way you mount it would be more important than the scope you put on it. A one-piece mount would be sturdier than a two-piece.Comment

It depends on where and how far you are shooting. There is not really an inexpensive scope that I would recommend for long distance target shooting. Generally, you will want variable magnification in the ballpark of 5-25x, lots of internal elevation travel, and a fine reticle.Comment

Whats your budget? And what distance are you actually looking/able to shoot?Comment

I tried to also and at the end of the day, for resettable turrets leupold just could not compete with vortex offerings. For cheap, PST is great. For mid budget, the HD gen 1 is great. above that, the field opens up to many options...Looking for opinions on scope options for a 338 Lapua used primarily for long distance target shooting.
