Wait!!! you know that this is a gun forum and you don't want any discussion of rifle mounted NV and mainly discuss helmet mounted NV. You skipped over the very basic and important discussion of NV generation. Which would help inform readers about cost, clarity, and relevance. The technology behind each generation and the current generation, which is substantially more (price) than anything you described. For example:http://www.opticsplanet.com/atn-nigh...vg0ps1540.html

The OP wants to avoid firearm mounted night vision devices in this thread, because of CA laws regarding firearm mounted night vision devices.
(There are CA laws that prohibits some types of firearm mounted night vision devices and there are no CA laws that prohibits hand held or head mounted night vision devices)

Please respect the wishes of the OP and not include any talk about firearm mounted night vision devices in this thread.

Yes, I know, that's why I linked to helmet mounted NV. OP disregarded a rifle mounted post(By JMP), but has a rifle mounted NV in one of his own post (post #2), so he needs to respect his own wishes, first.

False dude. While i apologize for any confusion, an IR pointer is not a night vision sight. It is simply a laser in the IR spectrum which is viewed through a PVS-14, and in the context of this thread the PVS14 is mounted on the head. I clearly specified this in the shooting portion as well as in the photos of the PVS-14 mated to a helmet. Very different than mounting a clip on or a scope with built in night vision capability physically to a rifle. In case you are referring to the object mounted on the receiver of the second rifle, that is an Aimpoint.

Regarding your wishes for me to go over the differences in technology, that would require far more technical knowledge than i possess. Without plagiarising someone elses work, i do not feel suited to the task of writing about the ins and outs of the technology behind each generation. I do not possess the knowledge to write a technical breakdown at a level of accuracy that i would be willing to put my name to, its simply out of my lane to do so. This was simply meant to be a primer to help people wrap their head around the components necessary to get going, and some basic thoughts of my own regarding equipment i have actual experience with. It was never meant to be in depth, there are plenty of technical resources available. I would be interested to see a technical breakdown of the generations and your experiences you have with any of the 3 generations.

That being said, this is an excellent write up on what is inside an Intensifier Tube

Regarding your link, a couple unscrupulous companies advertise Generation 4 but i will tell you right now, Generation 4 does not exist and even if it did it would be far far more expensive than $9000 for a dual goggle.

Good write up; insightful advice for those with no experience using NOD/etc. without having to go through all the trial and error many of us have gone through before.

The counter-weight for instance is a huge deal since many of us jerry-rigged our own type for those long dismounted patrols. Wearing a Kevlar for 6-7 hours straight and a set of NVG's attached up front really causes pain/sores even with a nice suspension set up. The helmet just doesn't balance well with all the weight up front.

Out of curiosity, other than the technical side of things, does anyone have any requests for a part 3?

As an Electronics tech I would love to hear your thoughts on an Active and Passive NV system, You believe there is such a thing as an Active NV system. I'd love to see one.

Or you could be polite and leave this thread as a helpful guide and discussion for NV beginners.

All NV being discussed here is passive, they just collect photons, create a signal, amplify the signal, and display the signal on a screen.
Active or passive is circumstantial based on conditions external to the NV device.
