    Mounting Kit for scope

    Hello to all,

I'm getting ready to mount my newly acquired Primary Arms 4-16X44 scope to my Savage Model 10 rifle using low mount rings.

Question has anyone used the Wheeler Scope Mounting kit that has enerything needs to properly mount the scope? Do I really need it? It is about $89 bucks and am willing to spend the bucks if it necessary.

I can't comment on if it's worth it or not. But I will say I've gotten pretty good results with a small vise, a couple bubble levellers, and a plumb bob. Good luck

No. Not worth it. Depending on your location i can help you but you should even be able to eyeball it well enough even without levels.

          OK I was wondering

Thanks guys I was just wondering. I admit I have mounted scopes in the past but always eyeballed it and never considered if the rings were lined up. I just drop them in and eye balled the reticles.

Personally I don't mind spending the money as I want to try and do the job right BUT if the consensus is not to bother then I'll have to thing about it a little more.

At least I might buy the torque wrench and bubble levels.

            I would lap the rings.

              lap the rings

              Divernhunter,

Sorry I live in L.A. so I can't use your stuff. If you suggest I lap the rings I can just get the kit which contains everything and handle it myself and use You Tube for the tutorial part.

Buy a torque screwdriver, a Segway reticle leveler and a magnetic bubble level.

Really depends on a few things.

If you are just mounting one scope and are buying above average quality rings/mounts than the kit probably isn't worth it.

If you plan to mount several scopes or are buying/using average or even "cheap" rings then it could be useful to have the kit and lap the rings.

Definitely get a torque wrench like the FAT Wrench at least, that comes in handy no matter what quality or quantity of mounts you get

                        Matt S.

Thank you for your reply. I just purchased a Primary Arms scope and their own brand of scope rings in the lower configuration to fit my Savage Arms bolt action.

The torque wrench for sure I wanna get and perhaps some sort of bubble levels in order to try and get this mounted more precisely than the way I've done others in my past ( eye balled it every time ).

Do I really need such a kit?? Maybe and maybe not but I don't mind spending the money for the tools if it really does some good regardless of the scope quality and rifle type.

                        Thanks again,

I like the Wheeler torque wrench a lot. There are ways to level your scope to the action for free without the bubble level.

True. There are also two methods of leveling. With the traditional method the scope is mounted level to the rifle. That's the way I mount probably 99% of customers scopes. The other method is to mount the scope level with gravity. I started doing my scopes that way awhile back and some of my customers(very few) want it done this way after it is explained to them.

The basic premise is that when a person shoulders a rifle in the most comfortable position for them, the rifle is not level, it's canted to the right or left. With this method you level the scope with the ground(gravity). In this case if the rifle is mounted perfectly level then the scope reticle is canted. I've attached a link that explains it much better than I can.

                              Horrendo Revolver,

I just shoot from the bench and so after thinging my best method would be when I get my bi-pod to level out the rifle before mounting the scope. Second would be the traditional way using my MTM rifle rest using bubble levels.

First I was looking at You Tube regarding lapping my scope rings. In all my rifles I scoped in the past I never could afford the tools necessary to properly mount any scopes. Now at the age I can slowly get more serious about doing this procedure.

Today or tomorrow I intend to get the scope level kit since it offers the torque wrench and the everything I need.

After viewing your internet link which way it's done seems to not matter much for a casual shooter like me. At long distance once can still hit the target after adjusting ones reticles during the sighting in portion.

Since I don't have much room to use the scope and some sort of plum line to line up the reticles getting the kit seems best for me.

Now all I need is some time and privacy.

                              Thanks for your detailed posting.
