    EOtech 557 reviews

Anybody using the EOtech 557.AR223 on their AR? wondering if the 1 MOA dots are too busy for small stationary targets? would the single dot (in the circle) version be better? this is going to be my first "red dot" sight. I don't want anything from aimpoint.
    Thanks

    Brian,

It depends on your intention for your rifle.

    1) The only reason that'd you want the 557 over any other models is you want the BDC.
    2) The BDC will only make sense if you've got the magnifier behind it.
    3) And you see yourself shooting between 300-600 yards.

Do you do all three of these? If yes, then the 557 is an excellent bet. If not, go with the 517 or 516.

      EOTech use

This post is a basic understanding of how to use the EOTech reticule in combat or hunting.

I am not going to get into actual bullet drops since the ammo used will throw those calculation off. I suggest reading the post on Mil dots.

What I am posting is more of a beginners guide and should be added to with anyone else's knowledge.

EOTech's mainly use a 65MOA circle with a 1 MOA dot inside it. Meaning the circle will cover an area of 65 inches at 100 yards. The dot will be 1 inch at 100 yards. From the center dot to the edge of the ring is 33 MOA (33 inches), the crosshairs are 6MOA.

Taking this into account, you can say, the 65MOA circle will cover 130 inches at 200 yards (11 feet).
The dot is 1 inch at 100 yards, 2 inches at 200 yards, 1/2 inch at 50 yards....on and on.
The side crosshairs cover 6 inches at 100 yards, 1 foot at 200 yards or 3 inches at 50 yards

A 6 foot tall man is 72 inches, a door is about 88 inches. A mans chest is about 16 inches wide, a torso is 17 inches long, a head is about 6X9 inches.

Using this you can use the known MOA of the reticule and determine the distance to your target and adjust your fire.

Look at this image from Talonarms. It states the target is 100 yards away. Knowing what the MOA of the reticle is we can safely assume the target is a man sized target viewed from the waist up. Even if the yardage was not told to us, we could assume this by simply looking at the image and measuring it up.

Lets edit this image. This is what you would see if the whole person was in view. taking into account the POI will be higher then the POA, since we have zeroed our sight at 30 meters and 330 meters, this shot should hit at about the chest or COM

Now lets edit this taking into account the known MOA of the reticule.

A building 100 yards away, as we line up on a doorway about 88 inches high.

An a building 200 yards away since the 65MOA circle is twice the size of the door.

The drawback to a single 1MOA dot is that it limits your CQB time, since the dot is smaller when looking at a target close, The positive side is you can place accurate fire at longer ranges. The 65MOA circle is what helps in CQB. Any close target placed in the ring is hit. At 50 yards and closer its very fast and you are not even looking at the center 1MOA dot. The ring is the what you line up on.

The BDC is a good idea, but it is a waste since you are now trying to do long range shoots with a reflex. You need a 3X to use this properly.

IMHO there is no use for a BDC EOTech, without a 3X. And and EOTech with only a 1MOA dot is limiting you.

        Nice post!

I've looked through a 557 without a magnifier, and the BDC marks were useless. They were just a few blurry dots that didn't provide any extra info at shorter ranges.

The 65 moa/1 moa combo works great for a lot of people, including me.

thats what i was afraid of.

i will probably just get a 9 or 10x scope for longer shots later. thanks for the answers.

Good write up on the 557 Eotech. I might be getting this in the future with the 3x magnifier.

hmm... I was thinking of upgrading to the 557 from a 516 in the group buy.

Wondering now if I should just get another 516 and FTS mag?
