Been toying with the idea of picking up a magnifier but want some opinions. Anyone use one consistently, as well as have any experience with the 6x from Aimpoint? At that whopper of a price i understand why theres really just crickets but if anyone has any input id be happy to hear it. Whats the differences in the eotech magnifiers as well? Anyone in Bakersfield have one i can play with? Thanks.

Magnifiers for RDS's
Tags: None -
I've used 3x magnifiers in the past. With the advancement of current 1-x scopes, I really don't care for the limitations and cons of using a magnifier compared to just getting a good 1-x scope. Also, for the cost of the 6x, which is just a piece of glass with no reticles or ocular adjustments, the price far too steep for what you're getting. I might as well just go with a good scope or a dual solution like an ACOG with an offset RDS.NRA Benefactor Life Member

I like the idea that i can remove the magnifier and still have a regular aimpoint as a primary optic. Im just not a fan of LPVO's. Cogs are high quality but their eye relief sucks and you are stuck at a permanently magnified power level which i also dislike.I've used 3x magnifiers in the past. Was in the same boat a few years ago. Went with the vortex 3x for around $200 and figured I'd give it try. 100% was the way to go. It sits behind an eotech 512. I couldn't justify dropping on the eotech one when I wasn't sure I'd like it.NRA Lifer

Do you run it on a qd mount or does it live on your gun the whole time.Comment

It lives on my gun. Didn't seem like there was a viable QD mount for it when I got mine. Haven't had any issue with the current mount and flips the left side out of the way. It can only flip left. I can shoot you a text later with some pics if you want.NRA Lifer

If you don't like LPVOs then magnifiers are really your only solution. I'd personally go with the Vortex magnifier over the Aimpoint. I've personally found them to be just as good without that, IMO, unjustified price. Of course if you want a 6x, I think Aimpoint is the only one who makes one at the mag.NRA Benefactor Life Member

I'm planning on picking up the Larue LT755/Aimpoint 3X-C combo when they get back on stock. The 6X would be nice (especially with the increased diopter adjustment), but I think I'd rather have twice the FOV than twice the magnification, especially with the 6X being more than double the cost.Comment

That would be dandy
Id want to go with the Wilcox if i eventually went down this route

Once I get off work I send some. That looks like a nice mount but there's no way I could justify that for a $200 magnifier. That's just me. If I bought the eotech or aimpoint then I could justify that mount. That would be dandy

It's one thing if you simply want to achieve a look for your rifle. In that sense it really does not matter how practical a magnifier is. You're just adding more weight and limited use.
Your primary is an RDS to begin with, so its not like you are varminting/squirrel shooting with this set up.
If you do a great deal of off hand shooting than 6 times begins to get even more cumbersome. Realistically you will only use that magnifier from a prone, supported sitting or kneeling and lastly off a bench. How much of that stuff do you do.
If from supported means there are much better options.
I ran an aimpoint 3X. Twist off mount. I found I kept it in my dump pouch more than on my rifle. I considered a flip to side but again, the only realistic time I needed to magnify was from prone.
Low power variables like the Leupold with the firedot are way more versatile without all the added weight.
But, for some it does not look as cool.Comment

Id like the option. At BLM its all offhand shooting including barricades, and i shoot offhand more than anything at my local range with steel of varying size out to 540. Regarding being cumbersome i already have a ton of crap on the gun as it isIt's one thing if you simply want to achieve a look for your rifle. Out here in Kern County it's all a matter of "how hard do I need to be tweaking to make this gun feel 3 lbs lighter?"
Pile the gadgets on, bro.Comment
