Alright maybe enlighten some of us who aren't in the know. I assume first step before this is to get a NVG set up? I saw your other thread about helmets. I am having a hard time justifying the cost to only use it a few times a year.

I had a conversation with a guy that has a LOT of time behind nods about the civilian vs full power lasers and he said he wouldnt hesitate buying a civilian one. Not only for the reasons mentioned in the video but because the high laser setting splashes way too much on a target and it is actually nice to have the low civilian setting (which is less than the low .mil setting) so you can actually see what you are pointing at.

I was that guy that thought I would make do with very basic night vision gear. And a year later after buying the cheaper stuff, learning the weakness of it and selling it at a loss, I'm basically wearing 8 or 9 PSA rifles on my head, and have tacked 4 or 5 more PSA rifles onto one gun with more on the way for another rifle. It adds up. If your schedule allows it, you'll find that being able to shoot at night means that you can shoot more often and in some cases, more discretely.

If you're looking for more info on where to start, check out TNVC's videos. And James Yeager *gasp* actually made a decent series of videos with Telluric Group on night vision that are good for a general intro.

              Face it. This crowd sucks.
I'm gonna jump into NV in July. Full power.
              Idaho. Yuh
To be fair, full power has nothing to do with what state you live in, the FDA regulates lasers. Plenty of full power PEQ15's for sale for $1800 if you want to go that route even in CA

Well that video snowballed in to a youtube marathon.

$1400 is pricey, any good links for an atpial?

10% off isn't hard to come by for OpticsPlanet. 10% off an ATPIAL-C is $1196 shipped. There might be 12% and 15% off coupons coming up as well.

First time stargazing with good nods will blow your mind huh. It's quite the holy F#&@ moment.

Love the D2. It's a rock solid unit.

When it comes to urban environments with lots of ambient light, C1 units suck. There isn't enough IR power to punch through the ambient light
(street lights/porch lights, etc) and view what is beyond that light source.

C1 units suck at rural areas on dark nights with cloud cover or no moon.

The exception to this are units that actually have good power IR illum, like the D2. That said, 600mW illum dominates over the 0.7mW IR laser-
this kinda forces you to open the flood wide and not have a focused IR flood if you want to see your pointer. You can see beyond ambient light, you just can't point beyond ambient light.

Honestly, I don't see much usefulness with C1 beyond indoor use, or directly outside in a front or backyard area that isn't well lit.

For the most part, I think the ATPIAL is the worst of the C1 lasers on the market.
The DBAL-A3 is what I have found to be the best, with the DBAL-i2 Single Spectrum IR right behind it.
