is the eotech 512 with the AA batteries good for a socom 2 and a sig 556 even though they are different calibers or does it matter??

You have to zero the sight to each rifle and have a mount that would hold zero between two rails.
It can be done: for example a Larue and remembering EXACTLY where to torque the nut and zeroing on one, than remembering exactly how many clicks for the other one.
But that's sort of like buying a dress for your wife/gf than modifying it into a set of coveralls for yourself on the weekdays and than turning it back on the weekends for her. It can be done, but it ain't gonna be pretty and one of these days your gonna be wearing a dress when you need coveralls.
So BUY TWO.
But yah the 512 will work on both. Better yet, buy the newer 517 since they come with longer battery life, side mounted buttons and a built in 7mm riser to get 1/3 co-witness and easier to mount. -
Dunno about the Sig 556, but an Eotech's liable to be too high for a Socom 2. It's designed for absolute co-witness (or lower 1/3 on some models, as bobfried said) on the AR, which requires the sight to be higher above the bore axis than traditional rifles.
I'm not an M1A guy, but I'd think an AR optic would be too high above the bore. I've used one out on a scout mount on a Mini 14, and it worked fine there, but it depends on where you're putting it.
Bushnell makes the Holosight XLP for lower mounting, but it's not really a SHTF optic.sigpic
