I have a rifle I just threw a Weaver Grand Slam 3-12 on. It works great for a budget scope.

Those Nikon 308 scopes work as well.

I saw Burris verocity 2.5-10 for 399 on natchezzs web site . Seems like they 599-699 normally
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

        Scope

Pretty good value on a Vortex here:

        http://cameralandny.com/spec-sheet.html?catalog[name]=Vortex-Viper-6.5-20x50-PA---Mil-Dot-Reticle-%23VPR-M-06MD-viper&catalog[product_guids][0]=1116852

If that link continues to act funny, go to the Cameraland website, look for Vortex riflescopes, the regular Viper line. It's 6.5-20x for $299 Mil-dot or BDC reticles.

Sightron SIII series 6-24x or 8-32x would come in under budget and be an excellent value as well.

Big Supply Shop has really good prices. Optics Planet too if you catch one of their 10 or 12% off coupons. One of the 10-50x models could've been had for under $800 recently with coupon.

Switchbarrel beat me to it: either a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP or 6-24x50 FFP. Both are fantastic scopes, and with their warranty I don't mind taking a chance on buying used. Given your application, I'd tend toward the 4-16 over the 6-24.
Nehemiah 4:13-18 I stationed the families at our vulnerable spots with their weapons. The men worked in shifts to rebuild our walls; one half worked while the other half guarded. Each of the workers had his weapon either at his side or in his hand while he worked.
