I had the opportunity to go on a pig hunt and get some time glassing behind a new pair of Vortex Razor HD 10x42's, and was able to pit them against my guide's pair of Swaro 8x42 EL Range.
When I first started glassing on the 3 day trip, I was immediately impressed by the resolution and contrast of the Vortex. Everyone who looked through them agreed. We hiked up a mountainside and had a good 2000 yard 180 degree look over a dry riverbed area and a tons of pig trails. The sun was setting and was facing us as we looked over to the other mountain across from us, so the sun was glaring right into the bino's. It was at this time that I noticed our guide had the EL Range bino's. I asked him how he thought they performed and he said he was happy with them. I asked if we could switch and compare and he said yes.
First thing I noticed was the lack of being able to focus them to get a tack-sharp image. It seemed like I was not able to get the resolution that the Vortex was able to get. The second thing, and this was huge, was that it had the worst glare I could have imagined! When looking anywhere near the direction of the sun, it was like I had a bright orange and hazy filter on the front lens of the bino's and it completely cut out anything I was trying to look for. The Razors on the other hand, had very little glare, comparatively.
This was my only experience with the Swaro's, and to be fair, my guide said they were an older pair, which maybe means they didnt have the Swarovision....I'm not sure. But all I can say is that I would have taken the Razors over that EL Range pair any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Has anyone else had this experience? Anything I have ever read has put the EL's a good notch above the Razors, and are pretty much the Alpha of the alpha's....but this was simply not my experience. Maybe a bad sample? Or maybe an abnormally good Razor sample? I'm really not trying to belittle Swarovski; I have no dog in this fight. Just relaying my experience and seeing if anyone else has had this.
