I am not a LEO or Mil professional. I am also clearly not a professional photographer. However, recently i was given access to an AK with an EXPS3 on it and a BCM with an Aimpoint Pro on it. I personally dont dedicate NV optics to my gun because i have a laser, but these gave me the opportunity to look at both NV settings under nvg's.
Important notes would be i am looking at these through a PVS-14 US Nightvision Gen 3 ITT Pinnacle tube holding the guns on a table unable to place the angle while trying to hold an iphone and the pvs behind it to take the photos. Hard as ****. My monocular is set at a far distance focus so everything in the photo is blurry and out of focus, as one should run their stuff due to the limited depth perception and range of focus. It is 4K clear outside past 20 yards. That being said, the reticles under NVG were days apart. Both were set to NV settings, both at the higher end of their power outputs for the respective spectrum. No internal or external IR was used and gain was set very low.
Findings:
The eotech blew the aimpoint out of the water. Also far easier to use moving through my apartment with the eotech. Why is this important? Laser failure. Will i go to the eotech? No. I still use an aimpoint h2 on my rifle as it is a day optic, and thats its purpose. At night my aimpoint is my BUIS and id rather use my unaided eye. However the pro under nvg was blurry and had alot of bloom around it while the eotech was crisp. I absolutely did not expect the eotech to look that good; so good that i am making this post to get all the crow i just ate out of my mouth.
Speculation: i think alot has to do with tube length. Less angle is needed to see the reticle of the eotech vs the longer tube of the aimpoint. Think of angles. I needed to get more centered behind the aimpoint to see the reticle. Thats important when you have a huge stupid device hanging off your dumb face. The eotech was just far easier. I have used my h2 in daylight settings with nvg but its also on a much higher mount. Whether its the shorter tube or the height of the mount, im not sure. But the eotech definitwly won in the NVG arena.
