My son just DROSed a Savage 10 BA Stealth (.308) and is looking for a scope. He would like to stay under $500 (he has a little wiggle room there). He is using this firearm for target shooting he isn't a hunter. The only range close by has a maximum 400 yards but he does, eventually, want to shoot farther though upgrading later is always a possibility. He also would like a Mil-Dot reticle.

Would appreciate some recommendations as well as what to stay away from.

I would consider increasing your budget. Good rule of thumb is to spend equivalent on your optic as you did on your rifle, if not double.

The minimum I would go is a Vortex PST. Also take a look at the SWFAs.

Lastly, there are a lot of threads here with the same question you asked. Look around a bit here in the Optics forum and I'm sure you will see a lot of answers already posted.

It doesn't take much to get hits at 400. You can spend a lot for a 400 yd scope but you don't need to.

Traditional mil dot reticles can be somewhat limited when compared to more advanced mil based reticles. I tend to prefer the holdover reticles that look like Christmas trees. You can hold over for longer shots rather than dialing, which tends to extend the lifespan of turrets typically found on <$500 scopes. I'd suggest looking into either the Athlon Talos BTR:

If you can live with an MOA based holdover reticle, the Cabela's Covenant FFP 4-16X44 is also an option worth looking at. I recently got one of these, and although the turret adjustments are a bit mushy, the glass and reticle are superb. I'd rate the glass in these a bit better than the Vortex PST scopes:

Classic SWFA fixed 10x on that budget is about as adventurous I would go until I had some more money to throw at the problem...

I would stick with a company thats tried and true and has a lifetime warranty. Leupold and Vortex come to mind.

Don't buy Sightron, I have 4 of their optics. Had one go bad and they blamed the problem on me, shipped it back without even contacting me or test firing the scope to see if was truly broken. The same problem existed after they sent it back to me so I had to re-contact them, argue over the problem, and ship it back again. They finally repaired the optic and sent it back. Never again will I recommend their products, customer service should be important but at Sightron, it's not! I buy leupold and nightforce now.

I have one of these on a 308 as well. For a sub $500, it's a pretty good bang for the buck.

While that can make sense, its not always applicable. If you had a $2,500 LWRC, i cant see the point of spending $5,000 on an optic for it

Thanks all. I am copying and sending all these suggestions for him. I just ordered a M1A scout yesterday so I could shoot with him. Going to get the Burris Scout Scope for that one.
