    Scope for Rem700 308

I have a Rem700 308 XCR that I'm looking to pair with a decent scope. Will be mostly shooting paper out to about 500 yards. I like the Vortex brand, so naturally, the first place I'm looking is Vortex.

This is my first bolt action centerfire rifle so I'm fairly new to precision shooting.

    Here's what I'm considering:

Depends on your budget and if you want something high end or something not.

Best bang for the buck in the $1,000 range. What's "high end", $2,000 +?

I have the pst you linked to. I like it, it works well. The front focal plane is very nice for sighting in and making adjustments or holding for wind at any magnification without a second thougt. It just works well. That all said. The actual glass of the pst is... well it works and it's okay, it's all the other parts of the scope that make it really nice. I have looked through my buddies zeiss hunting scopes and the glass is much better. The Trijicon accupowers I have looked through were also better glass as well.

So the scope kinda depends on what your actual needs and usage will be. If you would like really nice glass and will only be at a range shooting paper at known distances and don't need to make speedy elevation changes or windage holds, then I would not get the pst.

If you would like the ffp and reticle design and exposed knobs with pretty darn good clicks and illuminated reticle and clear good enough glass....then the pst is a great option.

I really like all the things my pst has, other than the illumination which I personally don't have a need for, but I know desire better glass, which is just a personal choice. But I am neither a good enough shooter to need $2k plus glass or at a point where I want to spend my money on it.

Side note, if you can qualify to sign up on promotive/experticity order your pst through them. Just check it out if it works for you.

Burris XTRII scopes are worth a look. Better glass and overall construction than the Vortex PST line. The 34mm tubes on the XTRII scopes will also give you much more elevation travel. IMHO, the Burris XTRII are the best scopes currently available in the $1000 price range.

For under $1000 and shooting ~500yds, I would consider one of the following:

(in addition or comparison to the Vortex PST 6-24x)

              Sig Sauer 6-24x

              Leupold VX6 2-12x42

I may be able to increase my budget if I hold off until December or January.

                Steiner T5Xi 3-15x50mm for around $1600

                vs

Vortex Razor HD Gen II 3-18x50mm for around $1800

Or is there a better bang for the buck in the $1700 range?

The Steiner has a 34mm tube while the Vortex has a 1" tube.

Vortex Razor HD Gen II 3-18x50 is a 34mm tube as well

The Vortex Razor HD Gen II scopes are really hard to beat...incredible value for the price

If you didn't want a 34mm tube, I would look at:

                  Sig Tango 6 3-18x44

Leupold VX6 is another great option to consider...3-18x or 4-24x
