    AR rear sight alternatives

When I first purchased my AR, I purchased a Magpul rear MBUS. It has the standard big circle to compliment the standard A2 front sight post. Are there alternative inserts such as a U-shaped or V-shaped aperture which might provide a quick and more accurate sight picture, similar to a handgun sight picture? I haven't bought a red dot or scope and I like the idea of a no-fail, no-battery sight system. Thanks.

          Thanks

Thanks guys. The 3-dot system seems pretty good, but now we are getting close to the cost of an inexpensive red-dot.

As to the Dremmel suggestion, it is actually a decent suggestion to make the peep into a "U". However, I am one of those people who should "step away from the Dremmel" when it comes to home-smithing.

Notches don't provide a more accurate sight picture.

That's why every US service rifle since the M1 Garand circa 1937, the M1 Carbine, the FAL (right arm of the free world), G3 (apart from the 100 meter CQB notch; used by every free country not issuing FALs except the US), MP5, and high power match rifles all have peep sights. Even Galils and Valmets dropped the AK47 notch for a rear aperture.

The HK designs go a step farther, wrapping the front sight post in a circle which is easier to center. The MP5 provides four aperture sizes with the same zero so you can use one most appropriate for your eye relief and light conditions.

Notch sights are for pistols, antiques, reproductions of antiques, children's toys, and communist rifles.

When I was in the Army, I had no problems with quick target acquisition using the standard M16-A2 sights. I also shot expert every time during qualification: Usually hit 39/40 or 40/40. You need to practice more if you are having problems. Shooting at 50 yards at night we used the large aperture, and I never had a problem

Most open sight Olympic air rifles use the aperture sights too. Really accurate sight systems. I have one and I wouldn't go back to the v notches.

                  Try Yankee Hill Machine.

I got a flip up set from them and they are great.

                  Search for model number YHM-5040-H

ETA: There are alternate sets. I believe they have an option which is not a peep site.

I recommend googling some videos on proper use of peep sights. There will be good and bad advice, but video is way easier to understand than posts here. The peep is much more accurate than any other option, and faster also when you learn to let your hand-eye coordination just do it for you not forcing it with too much cognitive thinking... the eye naturally wants to center the front post if you focus only on the front post. You do not look at the peep, ignore it's presence entirely, your eye will want it centered to eliminate the feeling of pressure to one side or the other, just let it happen.
