One thing I've learned with glass is that you will work with what you have until you look through better glass. Then you realize what it can be like.

Not that I have much experience since I haven't done much with scopes prior to now.

This is entirely true. I used to be fine putting around in my old Kia Rio. Dependable and got me where I needed to go. When I finally stepped up to a truly fine automobile, it opened my eyes to a true luxury driving experience. 84 months of a car note at 14% APR may sting now, but being the proud owner of a Certified Pre-Owned 2012 Corolla will last forever.

A couple that caught my eye and had good reviews were:

Burris Fullfield E1 $150 on sale from $300
Vortex Viper $199 on sale from $299
Leopold vx2 $450ish but do go on sale in the 300 range.

          All of those were 3-9x40.

          Others?

I highly recommend a SIG TANGO 4 series. I saved a few months to pickone up but man, I sure am glad I did. I have seen used ones that go around $300~$400. I have never owned such nice glass before. I will never buy cheap glass again.

I wonder who is making the SIG stuff. I can't imagine they are making their own. Maybe.

The Tango 4 scopes are made in the Philippines, same as the Vortex Viper PST and Burris XTR II scopes. I have the 3-12X42 version on an 18" SPR build. It has excellent glass as long as you stay on the upper end of the magnification. From 3-5X it has a really obvious fisheye lens effect that would make it pretty hard to track moving game. I returned the first one I bought due to this issue, the replacement scope they sent back is exactly the same. I'm not sure if the other Tango 4 scopes have this issue or not, but just be aware that the 3-12 model has some rather serious glass issues at low magnification.

                I've been very happy with:

As many of the others here stated Nikon and vortex is the way to go. Primary arms has a nice selection.

I own 1 of each and all have seen 500+rounds through it and have held zero.

                  Vortex 2-7x32
                  Nikon prostaff 3-9x40
                  Primary arms 4-14x44 ACSS 556/308

My only complaint about the Nikon is the eye piece looks like a magnifying glass with the center zoomed and the edges a little fuzzy sometimes

Try the Vortex Strike eagle. 1-6 is all you really need. (as far as my carbines are concerned). Can't beat Vortex' lifetime guarantee either.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.
