Max distance from 3x magnifier to Aimpoint?

Will a 3x magnifier still work if it is several inches away from a red dot sight? Is there a maximum recommended distance?

get your preferred eye relief from the magnifier, then move the aimpoint accordingly.
    How far? I dunno.

The position of the Aimpoint is fixed. This "theoretical" setup would be for an AK with an Ultimak rail. My idea was to mount the magnifier to the dust cover to keep it as low as the Aimpoint, but in order to get the proper eye relief (I am guessing) the gap would be as much as 4-5 inches. Just wondering if that setup would be satisfactory.

      My idea Photoshopped:

hmm doesnt the magnifyer make the red dot huge

seems to me you would want the red dot in the back to have a fine dot look at something big far away

but i've never messed with the mall ninja crap

what kind of magnification do you need to snipe an escalator rider

Whoah, that's a trippy setup for sure. In general, you want the magnifier and red dot as close as possible.
There are reports of dot distortion when they are further apart (USMC03's post on ARFCOM about the AimPoint magnifier).

Put them on a table and move them together and apart while looking thru them. Make an informewd decision the easy way.

I wish I could, but I am not in possession of said items. I will be getting the Aimpoint at somepoint but I started wondering if adding the 3x was possible too. I saw a photo of a dude with that setup and there was a decent distance between the optics, but not as extreme as the one I envision for an AK. I suppose if the eye relief is good enough, I could move the magnifier closer to the red dot if I need to... My problem is, I have never even looked through a magnifier so I can only guess. I was hoping someone who owns one could chime in as to: 1)whether the magnifiers distance to the red dot has limits, and 2)what the eye to magnifier distance should be. Aside from that, I guess I will just have to get my hands on one.

Here is the pic I mentioned earlier.

The magnifier makes the dot 3x as large, but it also makes the target 3x as large, so it's still the same MOA.

You can't have the red dot behind the magnifier, as the magnifier has eye relief, like all magnified optics, while the red dot doesn't. You could have one designed that would work that way, but it would be larger and more expensive, and I'm not sure there's a market.

These are a good way to extend the usefulness of a non-magnified optic by another few hundred yards.
