Aimpoint scratched lens

Hi guys, I recently acquired a aimpoint compm. The lens appeared very scratched (the lens in rear) the front lens are OK. I had called aimpoint tech support, and was told that they do not have parts for compm anymore, and will not be able to service it. That the lens itself are not scratched and it's the coating thats scratched. He said it was tritium nitrate or something coating. He does not know of any way of removing it, and if run the risk of compromising the sealant if I keep applying things to it.

So my Google fu turned up dry on how to remove coating/fix issue.. anyone happen to know how to clear the lens coating?

You could try to remove more of the coating but you run the risk of more damage.

At this point I would just use it, abuse it, and enjoy it.

Its an RDS... you could put black tape over the objective end and it would still be effective. Scratches like this are a non-issue.

I'm surprised they didn't offer to exchange it for next closet comparable RDS. Since they no longer have the parts to do the warranty work.
I thought Aimpoint had a lifetime warranty.

Lifetime Warranty doesn't and shouldn't cover end user ware and tear...

If it did, anyone could just abuse their lenses and start getting free upgrades. Lens abuse / neglect isn't a warranty item or a defect.

from what I recall aimpoint warranty is 10 years on optics purchased through an authorized dealer.

Learned about it when I purchased a super cheap brand new M4 and found out it was not covered because it was never slated to be sold in the civilian market.

I would place this under waer and tear, the aimpoint has been through alot. I wanted to pay for new rear lens, I never said anything to him about warranty.

If it's a genuine aimpoint comp series red dot, bet you'd fetch decent dollars for it even in that condition. The difference in what you get bs the cost of say an aimpoint pro could very well be what it would have cost to get it repaired

You can tell by looking at the picture it isn't a lens coating failure... it's abuse in the field caused by abrasive cleaning. It can happen to any coated lens... I have a set of prescription glasses where the AR coating looks identical to that after going though 3-4 seasons in the desert.

For example using a t-shirt when the lens when its sandy / gritty is a sure fire way to compromise lens coatings.

It takes a lot of abuse to get it to the point its at right now... if anything it speaks to its durability as its still 100% functional.

OP, I hope you got this RDS really cheap. That is the only way to justify buying it.

If you can figure out how to remove the lens you can buff it with plastic polish. It shouldn't touch the glass and will destroy your already jacked up lens coating.


Might get better, won't get worse. Get your friendly neighborhood welder to give it a shot of argon before you reassemble it. Unless you have a source of nice dry nitrogen handy.

Bought for ok price. Didn't know the lens where scratched up, I should have known better. if I can make it better, that would be a bonus. So I don't mind if I destroy it trying to clear up the lens. Yes it's 100%functional.I'm more curious as to a fix for the problem, mabe to help others
