Hunting scope for a 30.06

I recently purchased a browning x bolt 30.06 HG Fld. I will use this rifle for hunting deer, pigs and possibly elk. I am interested in spending around 1k to $1500.00. I hunt in the woods with 75 yard shots and in the large meadows where 375 to 400 yards.
I want to spend my money on a scope that will put the money where it's needed. Meaning I don't want bells n whistles I (an average shooter ) won't make use of. I do end up doing a lot of low light hunting.
I guess I don't really understand why I wouldnt just get the highest power ? Can you over scope that rifle?

I just want to say. That for newb or occasional shooter nothing beats Nikon!

I have personally taken complete news out to the range. At 800 yards had them making 6" groups. Using Nikon Monarch and Nikon software with Kenton Turret. Just have your load info and a rangefinder to find the range. I do prefer to use a Nikon's Scoped with the Nicoplex over the BDC. The Nicoplex with a Target Turret is superior to the BDC Reticle.

A 3-9X40 or 3.5-10X40 is all you need. Maybe a 4.5-14X40 but it is not needed on a 30-06 and for the ranges you will be shooting.
Buy whatever brand you want but I would buy a Leupold for any hunting rifle I own and that would be more than a dozen.
That is my advise as a successful hunter for many years.

It is your money and do as you please. You will learn from your mistakes.

On my .30-06, I use a fixed 6X Leupold. Simple, no power settings to confuse you when the game comes out of the bush; no fancy overly complicated reticles to get lost in, lighter weight than larger optics, and reliable. Sure, there are more expensive optics out there, but for a common deer rifle I think you will find it to be very suitable.
If your rifle is equipped with decent factory iron sights, consider QD rings as well.

For your use, A Leupold VX3 3x9x40 with the duplex reticle would be my ticket. You don't need a super high power and yes you can over scope a rifle like that, especially when you mention 75 yard shots.

I'm assuming you already have good binoculars? By good I don't mean $100 ones like some people on here claim are as good as swaros.

Clarity and brightness are far below a VX-1 which can be had all over for about $149 now due to a rebate. I don't know why anyone would buy a rifleman.

Glass is same in both. The Rifleman has wide duplex reticle and friction adjustments. VX-1 has different reticle and click adjustments.

Of those I'd get the Z5 3.5x18 (44). It has a low end good for the 75 yard shots and a high end for the further away shots and weights about a pound only.

I'd go for the BRX reticle though.
