School me on Zeiss V8 2.8-20x56 please

    Hi,

I was originally waiting to get the Leupold VX-6 for a while. First it was out of stock, then I bought a different gun and had to divert funds. Then we needed to put money into the house. I hate shopping outside my budget, but stumbled across this. Someone please talk some sense into me. I avoided March because I was told by several owners that they are rather delicate. I never looked at Zeiss because I can't afford them. Actually, please talk me out of even looking at these anymore. This might be something I would sell a gun for. I would love to hear some first-hand experience. Then again, I wouldn't. I'm talking to myself now, and feel a bit odd.

A scope not as rugged as a Leupold with an oversize OB bell which will require mounting it too high. Thus giving you a poor cheek-weld on a hunting rifle. On an AR type the high mounting would not matter and be needed. Also most Zeiss scopes are overpriced for me...........but they do have good glass.

You did not say what kind of rifle or the purpose of the rifle so I am making some guesses here.

Last I would not sell a firearm to buy a scope unless you did not want the firearm to start with...........even a Leupold scope which is what I would use on a hunting rifle/pistol.

The scope is going on my new hunting rifle, which has an adjustable cheek piece. It's chambered in 7mm mag, and will be carried. I planned to go with a Leupold, but this has been in the back of my mind for the longest time. I agree with the fact that the Zeiss brand is up there in price, but the rifle is a bit over the top, so that's how I'm justifying it.

          Your rifle.
          Your money.
          Your decision.
I say buy what you like.
"I personally" will only put a Leupold on a hunting rifle and all my hunting rifles/pistols have Leupold scopes If I had the money and could get a duplex reticle in a Nightforce scope I would want then I would maybe use it.

          My 2 Cents

Too heavy for a hunting scope @ 29 ounces. My friend had one on his 300 RUM and made me sight in his rifle when he had a case of the flinches... the OB is definitely a beast and was challenging to get my head down on the stock. It was tough to shoot accurately at high magnification, maintain a good cheek weld and not get belted by the recoil. Also, I would not put 56mm glass on a hunting rifle unless it was a heavy, long range rig.

            That enough reason for you?
Its an expensive hobby, but more expensive when you try and convince yourself you don't need what you really want.

I wonder how the glass compares to the VX-6 Leupold line. Thank you all for the input, I think I'll stick with the Leupold, but it sure would be nice to have something from Zeiss one day.

it sounds like you hold zeiss in high esteem, personally i dont. i would just get that high esteem thought out of your head. its 2016 and a lot of manufactures are making an extremely high end glass. i bought two $3k+ scopes in the last 5 years and neither was a zeiss.

if you are just looking for something expensive, go for the Schmidt Bender PM2 3-27.

It's a hunting rifle, so I would rather keep the weight under 30 ounces. The Zeiss falls just short of that. I do hold their glass in high regard, as do I hold S&B, Swarovski, March, etc. But the juice has to be worth the squeeze in terms of cash. It will get beat up. It might fall off a truck bed, rock, horse, or table top. It will get smacked against trees and fence posts. So I want to make sure whatever I get will take all that and smile.

yeah, i agree. it has to be able to hold up to some serious punishment. thats why i dont really like leupold. they have an awesome warranty but imo they arent built well enough to take a beating.

no doubt leupold will warranty the damage of one of their scopes after an accident but its a whole diff thing drop the rifle and the scope still be good to go. thats why i like us optics or nightforce at the 3k price point.
