What to Buy???

I currently have a AR15 that I want to add an optic on it. I won't be shooting anything farther than 200yards. I don't know what to pick between an eotech or aimpoint

If you do not need night vision the 512 is good.

It really comes down to the basic Eotech vs Aimpoint argument. I like my Eotech 552 a lot for plinking and range shooting, but for a serious SHTF gun, it's hard to beat an Aimpoint.

I'd get a T1 Micro if I were buying an expensive non-magnified optic today.

Why a t-1 micro?

I'm a huge fan of the 516.A65 (Just picked one up).

Reasons:

- CR123 batteries keep the overall size small.*
- Battery life is MUCH longer than with AA's.
- Side-mounted buttons for future magnifier use.
- The front is sculpted to clear a delta ring for forward mounting.

[*] - I use CR123's in all of my flashlights, and buy them in bulk. They are inexpensive, last a very long time, and have a 10 year shelf life. Also, most grips and/or stocks with trap doors are sized for CR123's. I can keep a whole replacement pair in my Ergo Suregrip.

If you are leaning towards an Eotech and plan to run it on an M4 rail without a flip down front sight, I would go for a 516 / 556 model. It sits a little higher so the front sight isn't blocking the reticle. Don't know why you would need the FN less lethal reticle. The A65 is good.

As for choice, you should go to a gun store and physically check out both to see which you prefer. Personally, the only time I ever used my Aimpoint was to sight it in. Don't care much for the 4MOA dot, and it is pricey for a simple red dot. My old LaserAim red dot I bought 15 years ago is just as good, still runs like a champ, and cost $50 back in the day.

I have fixed front sight so running the 516 / 556 model wouldn't interfere with the sight then?

The sight post will sit slightly lower in the field of view so you can still use as part of your backup iron sights, but it won't be blocking the reticle. The reticle will float a little above the top of the front sight on the 516/556 models.
They float right in between the 2 ears on the lower models, and the dot is slightly above the front post. Usable, but a little distracting/annoying. You can buy a base to elevate them.

Why a t-1 micro?

I'd say H-1 with a LaRue mount (you can find them on eBay for about $500).

The T-1 has NV which is useless unless you have it.

Why Aimpoint Micro? Lightest of them, 2MOA dot (good compromise for quick pick-up and precision), fast to turn on and off (even though you don't need to with years worth of battery life) and they're completely bulletproof.

I really like the EO reticle, but I've had personal reliability issues. The Aimpoints are just a better choice when it comes to needing them.
