Reflex sight on a Mini-14?

I have a Mini-14 that I bought slightly used. One of the first things I did when I bought it was to install a GG&G Picitinny rail because the factory screwed up the cuts for the Ruger scope rings so they wouldn't mount even close to proper alignment to each other (way beyond anything lapping could fix). At the time, I had an EOTech 512 lying around, so I mounted it on the rail and used it for a few years. I recently sent the EOTech back to the factory to take advantage of their refund program. So now I need to put something else on that rail. Since this is mainly a sub 100 yard rifle, I don't really want to put a scope on it and my eyes don't like to focus on the irons any more. I want something with a smaller body than the EOTech, so I was thinking of trying a Burris Fastfire III 3 MOA reflex sight on the rail to see if I like it. If it works, great. If I don't care for it, I can put it on my Mark II pistol and try a red dot sight on the Mini-14. I haven't seen too much out there from anyone who has used a reflex sight on a Mini-14. Anybody have experience with this? Did you like it?

I tried a cheap reflex for a while and it was just OK. My favorite sight on the rifle was a Bushnell TRS-25 on the GG&G rail like you have, seemed like a good height for the rifle.

Part of what I'm concerned about is the height of the sight. The idea behind the reflex was to keep the sight as low as possible.

This is what I would use. Keeps the sight low. If you don't like that solution there are a couple of rails available that clamp to the barrel just ahead of the receiver.

I like the model Scott posted. Occasionally brass would get jammed between the op rod and rail on my model, that one looks like it would do a little better clearing.

I tried both the gg&g version and the Burris mount for the Fastfire.
They are very similar,gg&g has a tail that attaches to the rear mount and the Burris mount does not.
I have not found anything lighter or lower than those two.

here's my setup with the GG&G rail, mepro 21 and a CT laser up front. Had the romm, so figured why not.

I like the idea of the Burris Ruger mount shown in the other thread that uses the forward factory ring mounting location and no bar across the ejection port like the GG&G. That will make the rifle much easier to take apart for cleaning. I think I'm going to buy the Fastfire III with the Picitinny rail mount (now $209 at Amazon, shipped), mount it on my rail for the time being and if I like the sight, I'll upgrade to that Burris Ruger mount for the lowest profile. Burris makes some cool low-profile mounts for when you need to keep a micro red dot as low as possible, I have one on a Henry H009. I also like the fact that Vortex mooched the FF3 mount configuration for their Venom, so you use the Burris hardware to mount them as well.
