Holosun Red Dots vs Vortex etc

I have been taking a hard look at some of the Holosun red dots. The primary arms ad-mds is a Holsun 403G more or less and the reviews have been pretty good. I have seen some other mixed reviews so there is a fair share of detractors.

The one I have my eye on is the 406A. It is basically a 30mm red dot with a 2moa dot and Aimpoint level battery power (claimed, of course). It looks very similar to a Strikefire. The specs look awesome but I haven't been able to find much info it; at least compared to the other Holosun products.

The page you’re looking for could not be found. Browse Holosun optics, support pages, or return to the homepage.

But at $200 is it a good value compared to a Strikefire or even an Aimpoint PRO?This is mainly going to be a range toy.

    Thoughts?

Look at the Hi-Lux MicroMax B
Introduced in late 2014, the Hi-Lux Optics MicroMax B-Dot is a mini red-dot sight that’s in the same category as the popular Aimpoint Micro T-1.Since, I have previously reviewed their optics ( CMR 1-4x review) for TFB, Hi-Lux Optics asked me for some design inputs during the development phase of this mini red-dot.I received my T&E sample just before last Fall’s Big 3 East Media Event and I was surprised by how good the final design is.The Hi-Lux Optics MicroMax B-Dot has a impressive 55,000 hours battery life, aircraft grade aluminum housing, and included a bunch of unique features and mounting options (which I will be going over in this review), plus all at a very affordable price point of $249 MSRP with a limited lifetime warranty.

        I have an MD-ADS.
I can tell you it's just as bright as any of my aim points except for the brightest nuclear fire setting. So say the Aimpoint pro/m68 go up to "11" the md-ads gets to 10.5
Also it's been running for several years (I think? Truthfully not sure) now without issue. I bought them within a few months of their debut and haven't done jack to it except turn it on and left it that way. Occasionally I check it and yep, still running.
Haven't had the opportunity to shoot it much. It was set atop my ar-47 pistol so she took some thumping but just kept running. At the range there was no noticeable difference between it and my aim points. It worked well.
        I'd say it's a pretty solid buy.

I just got mine yesterday and put it on a 10/22.

I'll preface this by saying that aside from astigmatism, I've had better than perfect vision my entire life, especially seeing far and in the dark. But I am 41 now and will admit that focusing on something closer than a foot is an issue, but don't need reading glasses.

I currently have the following red dots T1, T2, H1, MD-ADS, MRO, RMR and just adjust the brightness outside while shooting to deal with the astigmatism. I'm not the type to sit in my living room and complain about tint, glares and the shape of the dot.

I also had AR's with an H1 and MRO and a scoped 10/22 at the range yesterday. I had no problem with those dots and had no problem focusing on the reticle in the scoped 10/22. I also have no problem with any of my other optics including ACOGs.

The 503G reticle was a mess. It was actually better in my dark garage with the power turned down so you could just see it. I could make out the chevron and the 3 dots below it. Mind you, they were extremely small.

At the range however, once I got the brightness up so that it contrasted against my targets (black shoot-n-c) at 25y it became very difficult to make out a chevron, much less 3 separate dots. As luck would have it, the brightness settings were either too bright or too dark at that particular time (230p bright sun behind me, 90 degrees. I was under shade and the target was shaded by a berm).

Making out the tip of the chevron also proved difficult and the dot right below it was impossible to see, while the other dots I could barely make out. If I tried really hard I could blur my vision (target out of focus like shooting a pistol) and I could make the chevron look like a glowing neon sign and make out every tip and corner but this was hard to do as focusing on the reticle was impossible.

Unfortunately I was using it on a 10/22, so I wasn't able to view it through my rear peep to compensate for my astigmatism, nor could I use a magnifier behind it.

I bought it on Amazon so a return would be simple, but I think I will hang on to it and try shooting it under different conditions to see if there is any improvement. I suppose I could have a bad one too but I'd rather not sully PA's inventory because of my astigmatism.

The Holosun units are nice. If the max battery life is a priority, then probably can't do much better for the price.

I like the green dot option on the Strikefire quite a lot though and really appreciate that the controls face you (the shooter) which makes it easy change settings while the rifle is shouldered.

Add in Vortex VIP Warranty and I think the Strikefire is one of the best 30mm tube red dots out there for the price.

I would go with the Aimpoint over the Holosun for the QRP2 mount alone
