I am considering putting a nightforce 1-4x on my new ar build. I shot one once and it was pretty fricken nice. looking for some advice from someone who has shot one more than i have, pros, cons etc. it would be going on an ar with a 14.5 daniel defense barrel, (pinned and welded brake of course....), used for classes and range time etc.

nightforce 1-4x?

The nightforce 1-4 reticle and specs was never beer desirable in the 3-gun market. Now it's behind the curve on magnification too with scopes like the Leupold vx6 Multigun w/Firedot bdc and vortex razor HD II or even the $300 vortex Strikeagle having 1-6x. -
I looked through both the NF 1-4 and the Leupold.
Totally disregard manufactures claimed eye relief numbers; the Leupy seems to have an inch or more of usable eye relief over the NF. Based off of this, and the fact that I prefer the firedot duplex over the NF reticle for a low power optic, I bought the Leupold.
BTW, this is for a .416 dangerous game rifle, so eye relief and a quick reticle are VERY important.Comment

In the 1-4x world you have so many options have popped up in the last 5 years...
For NF type money, I would explore the gamut because you have plenty of options to choose from.
I'm not turning you away from the NF, but just make sure what you buy is setup in a way that's going to benefit you for the application. Capped vs Non Capped turrets and the reticle design + overall quality and optical performance.
I am a huge fan of the Vortex Razor, PST, SWFA 1-4x and 1-6x. If you want light and inexpensive I even like the Weaver 1-3x on an AR. Trijicon makes one of the best for daylight use but I have some reservations about their reticle for distance shooting.ExtremeXComment

Well, it depends on your intended use. That NF is a military grade optic. IF you are looking for a very tough optic with good glass that might be your best option.
There are many options in the 1-nX area. If you are looking for a 3Gun optic there are quite a few options and each person who competes has their own idea of what a good optic is.
Some of these optics have exposed turrets, which are not necessary for low power optics and can be bumped out of adjustment. Especially if they don't have zero stop. Trijicon, has capped adjustments. Check the others out for yourself. SWFA optional, I'm not sure about the others.
The Vortex Razor 1-6 is just too heavy IMHO - And can we just get black please?
SWFA 1-4X - I have one of these bought long ago. A little heavy, great glass, but reticle is not that great. First Focal Plane reticle can be great. Not on this scope.
SWFA 1-6X - HEAVY - Great glass, not so hot FFP reticle, but better than SWFA 1-4
Vortex PST - Never seen one, but I've heard complaints. Check it out anyway.
Vortex Strike Eagle - 1-6x Chinese crap.
I have a Trijicon Accupoint Tr24 R - which is the red triangle post reticle. Great for fast shooting good glass, no batteries needed, BUT not useful past about 200 yards because holdovers are very difficult.
Check out the Trijicon Accupower 1-4X - Sounds good to me, good eye relief, good LED reticle with BDC holdovers, capped turrets , good glass, Trijicon quality and warranty.
Also the Trijicon Accupoint 1-6x, some people like this, reticle is not as helpful as the Accupower 1-4X.sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.Comment

Take a look-->http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1208041
Just because it is new, doesn't mean its better. I don't trust EOTech, and this is their first variable optic scope.sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.Comment
