    Cheap scope versus expensive scope

This is a newbie question, but what exactly is the difference between a cheap scope and expensive scope.

I have a Centerpoint from Walmart that cost about 70 bucks. It works fine on my Savage .22 bolt action. It holds zero and the cross hairs look fine.

Would I benefit anything from going to a nicer scope? I can't imagine how it would be any different. Or is that only necessary if I shot something with more recoil?

On a 22, as long as it has good eye relief and is clear enough to see .22 holes your fine.

There are lots of improvements as you spend more on scopes, and whether they make a difference to you depends on your needs and wants.

More money gets you all these things, in varying amounts:

      - Better optics give more clarity, better light transmission, better edge clarity, better color rendition, etc.

      - Solid build gives longer life, better reliability, more precise and repeatable adjustments, sturdiness, etc.

      - Better brands have better resale and hold their value better.

Beyond that, there are more options for better scopes - more reticle choices, factory upgrades, etc.

Not all of that matters to everyone. I have lots of inexpensive but not cheap scopes, a few cheap scopes, and a few expensive scopes. They all have their places, even the Tascos that came on used .22 rifles.

It might not make much of a difference when mounted on a .22 and your just out shooting at ground squirrels or jack rabbits. But when you spot that buck of a lifetime and you go to put the cross-hairs on him and find your scope all fogged up because of moisture leaks, then you'll wish you had spent the extra money.
