I did a forum search and also Google and could not find much reviews and opinions on this. I just bought my first AR last month, a M&P Sport II, and as a beginner I'm not looking to spend the same price or more of the rifle itself for a optic yet. I'm just doing target practice at 25 yards at most. I heard a 1-4x scope would be better but I have no idea what to choose around the $200 range.

Any opinions and suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you.

That Vortex Spitfire is a pretty nice optic for the price. It has the etched prism reticle, with illumination (both red or green), that works great if you have astigmatism and thus see red dots as blurry. The prism reticle is also still visible if your battery runs out, unlike red dot sights.

That said, the version you linked is going to be discontinued when the new Spitfire-AR optic comes out late summer (supposedly). The new one is more streamlined:

That one is supposed to come out at about $249-279.....unless you got in on a "offer" that was extended to some of us on a pricing error about 3 months ago, in which case we can order for $150 shipped.

1-4x scopes are more versatile, but are longer and heavier. I'm replacing an Eotech (1x) so I'm going with the Spitfire AR when it comes out.....I only use the AR for defense or range to 100 yds. Red dots have become blurry for me due to slight astigmatism.

If you're like me and only want to shoot close quarters or short range, a 1-4x isn't needed. You mentioned shooting at only 25 yards.....

Here's a pic from the current Spitfire you linked originally......in the center of the inner darker black circle is a 3moa dot (for precision work) that you can't really see in this pic but is easily visible viewing through the optic. This reticle illuminates red or green, too. I returned this optic so that I can get the newer one late summer.

I just decided that I'm going to return my brand new Spitfire 1x (SPR-1301) and get in line for this newer gen Spitfire 1x AR (SPR-200).

They are not drastically different (same prism/reticle), but the new gen has a cleaner appearance with the top illumination knob eliminated, in favor of push buttons under the eyepiece, a la Eotech.....also uses a AAA battery instead of CR2032.

Can't beat the $150/shipped price....just gotta wait 1-4 months to get it. Please hold off the terrorists for me, guys!

As I research more my price point I'm willing to pay goes up lol, I'm at $400 for a Vortex Strike Eagle and a mount. I just hate thinking that $400 could go towards a new gun.

I think it's mostly cosmetics in difference, due to a relocation of the battery that permits streamlining. Almost for sure the glass and reticle is the same. The $180 is a good price as of today.

I returned my $470 Eotech and feel the 1x Spitfire will give me all I need for close quarters and short-range shooting, at 1/3 or even 1/2 the price. It's nice to be an Operator, but realistically-speaking, I ain't shooting anything but paper

Before you buy think about this, are you always going to shoot at that distance? A 2x or even a 5x prisim optic gives you the option to use if you decide to go where you can shoot 100, 200 yards or more with excellent results.

Yeah, this is what I am thinking, too. I got in on the error, and i'll end up with the Spitfire AR 1x - if they ever do ship it. The date keeps getting rolled back. But, I am tired of waiting, and i also want something that can go the distance, so I'm thinking to go for the 3x. I'll throw the 1x on something else.

I agree, that's why when the store I bought my M&P Sport from tried to sell me a $600 Eotech, I told them that's the cost of the gun! I made a mistake with my Glock, the gun cost $500 and I spent more than the cost of the gun itself on add-ons. I have since put the Glock back to stock for reliability since that's my HD, and the AR is just being shot at paper no more than 25-50 yards. I have no doubt though eventually I'll end up with a $1000-2000 AR and have a expensive optic on it that I wont have a need for.

Thank you for that, my price point went from the $200 Strikefire to $400 Strike Eagle and mount. But realistically I think the Strikefire fits 99% of my needs. I may pay a little more for one that magnifies as you sugeested.
