    Frustrated with scope & rings.

Just picked up first AR (M&P15 5.56). Read posts previously (I think either in another thread or forum as a search proved negative). Anyway...read posts previously that using medium rings (UTG 1/2" QD - http://www.amazon.com/UTG-2PCs-Grade...e+Picatinny+QD) with a Nikon P223 scope would be a good fit, but the installation doesn't work/ The scope doesn't clear the rear sight.

I'm frustrated. Can someone recommend rings that will work with this scope (prefer to not return this scope for another). I prefer the rings are QD. If not QD, I'm frustrated to the point where I just want rings that will clear the rear sight and work with the scope. Thanks for the help.

My go to AR rings are Nikon P-mounts. Correct height for most and forward offset for longer scopes. Magpul rear folding sight just clears bottom of scope. That being said, the ring height (top of rail to bottom of scope where rings touch) of the Nikon mount is .9" or 22.86mm.

If you are going to use the UTG rings that you posted, which have a 15mm ring height, you will need a rail riser that is about 7.86mm. Don't think they make them that low. What you want is a rail riser / rings that add up to about .9" like the Nikon mounts. Of course YMMV and .9" may not be the correct height for your cheek weld.

If your rear sight is not folding, you will probably have to remove it. If you are mounting a scope, you will probably end up removing it anyway.

My recommendation is to get the Nikons or other rings made specifically for the AR platform, again, which are the correct height for most.

      Appreciate the advice.

Since my original post, I've done more research and I'm starting kind of fresh.

I will go with the P series rings. I only wanted QD rings to take off the scope when doing maintenance (I guess I'll have to make do and adjust accordingly). As for the scope, my policy in life was always get more capability then I need. Reviewers like the P-223 3x32 for shooting accurately as far as 150 yards (standard YMMV phrase applies). For range use I don't think I'll shoot farther than that but...thinking I'll get the Nikon P-223 3-9x40 600 in case I have an endless field to shoot at. The down side is (besides being $50 more) is its heavier and maybe the balance of the AR comes to pay if I shoot freehand. My guess is whichever I buy I'll say to myself I should have bought the other.

Anyway, it was the rings that frustrates me more then which optic I go with. Thanks for the help.

        Frustrated with scope & rings.

        1) Don't use rings on an AR. One-piece cantilever mounts, which set the optic at the proper height and push the scope forward for proper eye relief without engaging the handguard, are almost always a better choice.

There's an unfortunately aging but still valid comparison page here. I can personally recommend the offerings from ADM, Larue and Midwest Industries, but the Burris PEPR is an inexpensive and popular option.

        2) Don't use UTG. Their gear is cheap for a reason.

Will a one piece mount fix your problem? That's all I use. Samson DMRsnd AMD Recon will last a lifetime. If you want a cheaper version the Burris pepr or vortex has some Chinese made options that work. Good mounts/rings are well worth the money though.

The Weaver SPR is a good relatively light weight and inexpensive one piece cantilever option. It's not QR, but is available in 1" and 30mm.

Id go with a 1 piece Warne, or Leupold. Stay away from the Vortex its borderline useless.

That Weaver base is (suppose to be ) made in the USA. The only thing I don't like about it is the hand tightening knobs. I want to be able to use a torque wrench.

OP, I purchased these exact rings. They are total garbage, literally. Take them off your rifle and throw them in the trash. If only I had figured that out sooner.....

Burris P.R.E.P.R is a good idea, so is the Leupold 1" cantilever. MUCH better solution.
