Aging eyes also, decided to go with regular scopes. I have no experience with Leupold scopes.

I did recently purchase a Burris TRS-25 RDS at a really good price with riser but only because it was so inexpensive and generally highly rated- sole use for fun, short range target 25 yds. or less. It could be used for HD with a AR but I use handguns for HD.

Two recent scope acquisitions were both Nikon 3-9x40, one a Buckmasters II for a AR and the other a Rimfire II for a Marlin 60. Total cost for both was less than $200. Mounted these scopes but haven't had a chance to sight them in yet. They appear to be really nice scopes for the money.

Little over a decade younger than you, but I've had to wear glasses since before high school. I do best with peep sights and standard scopes.

Both of my ARs have 2x7s on them. One is an older Nikon prostaff, the other is a Burris fullfield E1. IMHO they are the best of both worlds; very little magnification at the low end that lets me use two eyes if I want, with a decent high end for "distant" targets. Both are simple, and add less than a pound to the rifles. The Nikon is old school, with a standard reticle and coin slots in the turrets, while the Burris is a new model, with a nice glass etched floating reticle, and covered finger adjustable turrets. Both work out very well, and I'm happy with them.

BTW, Leopold makes a great scope.

      Hope this helps

Went with Vortex, just check the eye relief numbers as that will make it much better with your glasses

I am not 70, but I am getting there, and my eyes are also not as good as they use to be. I have made up my mind that a regular scope would be better for me for anything but very close range (less than 50 yards). A red dot usually only has a one year warranty, but regular scopes have a lifetime warranty. The reason why the manufacturers can offer lifetime warranty on regular scopes is because they usually don't fail. That is the main reason why I feel a regular scope is better.

Vortex Optics seems to be the only company that offers Lifetime Warranty on their red-dot sights.

Old eyes, glasses, plus astigmatism means scopes on both of my ARs... 1-6 on my 5.56 and 2-7 on the 22LR gets me to 100 yards...
