34mm rings?

Hello all,

I am putting together my first long distance rifle. I have the Remington 700 SPS Varmint (26" barrel) chambered in .308 (might be changing to the .260). Just purchased a Medalist #2 stock, CDI magazine system with AICS mags, Timney 517 trigger, and the Bushnell Elite Tactical scope.

It was suggested that I get the Millett Tactical 34mm rings for it. But all I can find are the "low" ones. Not even on Millett's website do they have them as an option to buy.

Buy the "low" ones from Millett?

Find another alternative? If so, what?

I'm confused. What height are you looking for?

Also, do you know how high these rings are? I checked Millett's website and they have 3 heights listed - low, med, high - but they don't tell you the actual height.

I prefer Nightforce's rings or Vortex/Seekins rings if on a budget personally.

I would skip Millett rings all together. Many companies DO NOT properly specify the height of the rings. (base vs center)

Get Seekins/Vortex rings.

Warn rings are pretty decent on a budget. I've been using these to mount a 33oz Burris scope on a 300 Win Mag. No issues holding that amount of weight under recoil for about 100 rounds so far.

I don't know, but I am pretty sure that the "low" ones are too low.

I will look up the Warn, Nightforce, Vortex/Seekings setups. Also a friend suggested the Badgers...

For what it's worth, I used to have the following setup.

Remington 700 5R in .308
Factory stock
Nightforce 20moa Scope Base (rail)
Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21x50 34mm Scope

To mount the scope, I used Seekins 34mm LOW rings. Per Seekins, these rings were 0.92" high.

The reason to get Millett rings would be that they are just about the only brand that makes really economical 34mm rings. The Bushnell is quite light as far as 34mm scopes go so I don't think they would be an issue. Also, if you are shooting an R700 w/ the 50mm objective and a traditional AICS, the low rings will probably be fine. If you have an AICS like the AX with the rail on top, then you need to be looking high.

Really all that matters is that your rings provide the correct fit and do not move. Most of the rings that retail from $50 to $400 will accomplish this. Personally, I prefer using one-piece mounts so the scope can sit in the mount and be done with it. Plus, one-piece mounts give you more rail grab and can be made at different tilts. I think the Accuracy International mounts are the best for the dollar ($170).

If you do not know about fit, call up one of the major online stores like SWFA and ask. They should help you get into something that will match.

Then, obviously, you probably would not want a QD mount with a bolt rifle so you can save money there as most places charge a lot for QD.
