Scope Rings or Single Mount for AR .308?

Looking into getting a Vortex Viper PST 4-16X50 FFP for a .308 AR. This is my first scoped rifle and looking at what makes the best sense for a mount.

After a brief search here in the Optics Forum, I didn't see anything on point, so I thought I'd see what all the CalGun Experts say on Rings vs. single mounts and if QD makes sense.

I don't have to take the scope off but it would be helpful in storage. I would not want to use QD if it adversely affects re-zeroing.

    Prince not really an issue.

    Thanks in advance.

I like one-piece mounts, and I prefer a bolt-on mount to a QD mount. I like one-piece mounts since you just put your scope in there and it's done as well as the fact they are nice and strong. I also don't move my optics around so QD levers are usually not as strong as their bolt-on counterparts. If you plan on taking your scope on and off, then QD may make sense. For ARs, people generally use cantilever mounts since having the mount sit a bit forward is typically where you want your eye relief. Given that you have a 308, you may wish to get a 20 MOA cant in your base to give your scope enough elevation for further hits.

Larue makes a great detachable mount. Throw levers are very strong and tight. But then again I have good quality flip-up irons on my AR10 also.
So whatever floats your boat. A canted mount like mentioned above if shooting for distance. Whatever you use, make sure you're going to have proper eye-relief.

I like the rugged Samson DMR mount especially on a .308. Optics Planet has then for about $150. They should have a 10% off code listed on the forum somewhere too.

American Defense Manufacturing's AD-Recon mount is a nice one for a .308 AR. Single piece cantilever, QD, very well made. I've got two for mine; a standard for a 1-6 scope and one with a 20 MOA cant for a 6-24. The QD makes it trivial to swap them.

That's the one I was talking about. ADM rebranded them for Vortex too.

Always one-piece cantilever for AR-pattern rifles. QD or not is more a question for you.

Do the one piece cantilevers come in different heights? It's my understanding you want the scope as low as possible, correct?

They align scope height to sight height, which is roughly standardized. You'll be fine.

Rings are almost always too low unless your body has unusual proportions. The one piece is designed to but the scope at the same height as the sight on a carry handle, which is optimal most of the time. I much prefer a one piece. Some people don't care for the Burris PEPR. I have two and they work fine for me.

                          The best, Spuhr.

Check out Warne x-skel cantilever mounts. I think you will like them.
