Dreaded scope advice post: which scope?

I generally hate posts asking what scope to get but here we go:

I'm looking at something for a midrange hunting and semi-precision rifle. Not a mag dump beater. It's got a good barrel and a good trigger. It's gonna thump some coyotes and maybe raise a little hell with varmints (I already have a varmint rifle so this is not the main role). I'm looking for something under $300 with a mount (I'm cheap). Decent glass and lightweight are what I'm looking for.

    I've narrowed it down to:

Leopold Mark AR 3-9 w/mount ~20 oz $300 I can get another mount and drop 5 oz if I need too.

    Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 $200 +$80 for a mount @ 12 oz total

    Both duplex reticles.

Sorry for this post but I need some fresh ideas.

I would look at the Primary Arms 1-6x24 with the ACSS reticle for $269.99. It is out of stock at the moment, but I would ask them when its available. I have 3 of their scopes and love them.

Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 3-9X40 would be on my short list for that application. The DOA 600 reticle would make for fast holdovers once you figure out how your drop corresponds to the reticles hash marks. Weight is 16.6 oz:

I use a 2x7x33 on my coyote AR. What you are asking for is really two different rifles.

This is gonna be a coyote/truck/walking varmint/close PD rifle. I have a heavy varmint rifle already.

I ended up ordering the 2-7 with an aero mount for it. For me compact size and weight trumped the mark ar. Scope and mount comes in at around 13 oz.

The Mark AR has visual elevation and windage marks on the turrets. The VX-1 does not. The Mark AR also has a larger objective lens, so you will get more light to see better in low-light conditions. I do not know which one has better glass.

Either Leupold will be your best bet.

I know that the OP has already made his choice, but would still like to throw this suggestion out.

Look at the Burris Fullfield E1 line.

I was looking at the same scope lineup for a .223 Wylde AR. Went with a 2-7x35 E1. Very good glass, nice usable floating recital, and easy to adjust. Scope and the inexpensive Monstrum offset rings weigh in at 15 oz.

It was easy to zero at 100 yards, and the bullet drop marks work well out to the 300 yard mark. I'm very happy with this setup

I steered away from the Burris' only because I don't like how the ocular rotates to change power because I like to use flip caps. Deal breaker for me.

FYI: They fixed that. On my E1 Fullfield 2 its a power ring thingie like most mfgr's so you can use caps.

But yeah that is annoying when you are trying to run butlers.

^ +1 They apparently changed that on most of their scopes except for the standard Fullfield II. The E1 works like a normal scope.
