Thinking about picking up a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x

I'm looking for an optic for my 6.8 AR that I will be using for deer and hog hunting. Distances would be out to 200 yards, maybe a little longer on the rare occasion. I would guess most shots would be within 100 yards.

I would like to keep it at 1x on the low end for quick target acquisition, and would like an illuminated reticle. The BDC is for 5.56, I'm assuming all I will have to do to use it with 6.8 is to calculate at what distances the hash marks line up, correct?

I looked at the Vortex at a store today, and liked it.

What other scopes should I be looking at for similar price/features? If I spend an extra $200 or $300, what would that gain me?

I don't know much about mounts, other than I will need 30mm rings. What do I need to look for in a mount? Any suggestions for ones to go with?

I will have flip up iron sights with this rifle. Ideally I'd be able to shoot through those if I have to without removing the scope and just setting it to 1x. Will this be possible?

Primary Arms 1x6 ACSS $269! Very similar, almost identical except for the ACSS reticle. You'll need an extended cantilever mount to get good eye relief.

Just bought this scope and I like it too. Get it at Primary Arms. They discount the rings when you buy scope. For rings, get an extended one like the American Defense Recon mount.

I was in the exact same situation and opted to save a little bit more for a used Vortex PST 1-4x. I prefer better glass over the extra 2x reach of the strike eagle.

I would recommend going with the strike eagle over the primary arms simply for the lifetime warranty of vortex vs the 3-year warranty of primary arms. From the reviews it seems to be identical glass/scope with different reticles.

For under 200 yards, I would go with a better quality 1-4x, no questions asked. While the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x is good quality, I would opt for the newer Trijicon AccuPower 1-4. You can get them for anywhere between $600-$650. It's made in Japan and has Trijicon's name on it.

I chose this one with the green reticle:

I absolutely love it. I think it's probably the most solid buy for a 1-4 for a compromise between cost and product. I really don't want to spend $1000+ on a simple 1-4x but I would also prefer a quality made scope. The AccuPower was the answer for me.

For the record, I haven't tried a StrikeEagle yet, so I can't speak towards the quality of it.

Have you considered Flip Up 45 degree sights. I have the Strike Eagle with 45 sight but mine are fixed (not flip up). I like having them off to the side and out of the way.

Just got my Strike Eagle today, scope is pretty dang awesome for the price point. Glass looks really crisp and clear. I had a Trijicon TR24 prior so I'm comparing the Strike Eagle to the TR24.

Got mine from Optics planet for $300 and free 3 day shipping.
