    Next steps, Optics or what?

I'm new to the AR platform and I want to minimize dumb rookie purchases as much as I can. I just picked up a Colt 6920 with all the magpul the factory put on them, I also grabbed a B.A.D lever but what now? My guess is to find some kind of optic to work with but should I put my money into a trigger/trigger job?

I don't know guys, I just hope to get some suggestions and advice to set me off in the right direction.

Before you throw money on your AR, it's best to shoot and practice with it first. Learn shooting off iron sights and watever trigger is on there now. No need to "hook up" your rifle unless ur one of those gear queers! My advice, shoot it and enjoy it.

Waiting for my refund, i have been looking at the vortex prism series. A little heavier than my eotech that got sent in.
Buis i am using diamond head irons. I was torn between those and the troy battle sights.
Ymmv. Just my opinion which doesnt mean much.
As for trigger? Just shoot the snot out of that ar. The more its shot the better / looser she gets.

Over the years, I bought scope after scope and red dot after holographic sight. Usually in the $100-$200 range, always hoping I'd get lucky and stumble on something exceptional. Some were not bad and some were dim or cloudy.
Eventually, I bit the bullet and bought my first Acog. At the time, it cost as much as my rifle itself, but it was the best shooting investment I ever made. The difference in clarity and precision improved my accuracy immediately and made shooting so much more of a pleasure.
Since then I have purchased two more Acogs, and two Eotechs to replace lesser sights. I only wish I had gone that route from the beginning and saved myself the grief.

So buy some ammo and go shoot. Preferably take a class of some sort.

Do you have any idea what type of optic you want? No? Then don't buy one.

Do you have any idea what type of trigger you want? No? Come on, take a guess what my answer will be. "don't buy one" yup, don't buy it.

Go shoot it, with your iron sights. Figure out if you like more of a defensive, close quarters, 25-100 yd. weapon or a more precise, distance shooting one.....then study optics.

First AR I bought I left irons on for over 3 years. Stocked up on XM193 (Federal/American Eagle 55gr 5.56) and took some classes and just had fun.

Hitting what you're aiming at with irons at decent distances- 200-500 yrds is a ton of fun as long as your eye sight is ok- I'd just stick w that unless for some reason you plan on using/training w it for HD. In that case I'd just buy an Aimpoint PRO for $400 online.

But first 5 yrs of shooting I had 1 AR and an M1A- so only used irons- and had so much fun with those at the range. Many years down the road I decided to scope one of my rifles- a ton to learn w a scope and I'm still learning- but for now I'd stick w irons for a while then buy a RDS if you want.

For right now all you really need to be doing is buying ammo in boxes of 500-1000 rds. Buy ammo!!!!! and enjoy that great rifle of your's.

Ok so buying a bunch of ammo, get range time and taking a class sounds like the plan for now.

Next question, maybe this should be a new post.
I have a 1/7 16" barrel on the Colt. I know the charts show that 62 gr or 77 gr 223/556 is going to perform best but what will happen if I get 55 gr 223/556? Almost all of the "good deals" or even just stock on the shelves I'm seeing is for 55 gr.
Is the only sign of bullet performance the groups size? Right now I'm not sure if I will be able to tell if it's my ability to shoot a consistent group or the ammunition's accuracy.

Can I tell if the bullet is or isn't stabilizing correctly? Are there signals from the rifle or just in the shape of the hole in the paper?

The 55gr shoots and groups fine for general range purposes.....the hole looks the same, lol.

I asked about identifying the hole in the paper because I understood that if the bullet under stabilized or over stabilize it could tumble. If the bullet tumbles can you tell by the shape of the whole. I wasn't trying to ask a stupid question.
