Will this ACOG work for me?

Ok here it goes. I am trying to pick which ACOG would best fit my needs. Rifle is a Colt 6920 16in barrel. Ammo is my hanloaded xm193 clone. It runs right around 3,086 fps with a 55gr Hornady FMJ.

I am aware ACOGS are calibrated in meters. I am trying to figure which one will have the most accurate BDC in yards for my ammo. I have narrowed it down to the TA-31D calibrated for xm193 or the TA31RCOM4 calibrated for m855. Can anyone please help fact check my work and see if you agree with my conclusion that the TA31 RCOM4 will work best?

I made two charts one is for the TA31D and the other is for the TA31 RCOM4. On the left side is the range in yards and bullet drop in inches for my hand loads. On the far right is the drop in MOA and inches within the BDC at each stadia line. This information was provided by Trijicon. The numbers in the middle of the page are how much I calculated each mark would be off at the various ranges in YARDS while using the BDC in the reticle. I got this number by subtracting the number on the far left from the number on the far right.

Data for my hand loads was gathered by ballistic AE. With a sight height of 2.8in, 29.92Hg preassure, 59 *F, relative humidity is 78%.

If I did everything correctly it looks like the RCO will work great.

If anyone can confirm if my data is correct or if they have any personal experience using either optic with xm193 it would be greatly appreciated.

    Take Care,

    - Adam

Sight height would be more like 2.5" and if your going to get an Acog the new ACSS TA31 is the one to get.

Sorry I forgot to mention this. I am set on the TA31 with a red chevron. I want the same rifle/optic I am issued. I got the sight height from Trijicon.

I was a Red chevron fan too....

Until I bought a green reticle ACOG and started using it.

Night and day difference when using at night. You can barely see red at night; it is practically unusable if you dont use night vision. The green, however, pops like crazy at night. Almost like it has a battery!

Daytime, they are pretty much the same, but I have found that I still prefer green during daytime.

To answer your original question, the M193 projectile should match up pretty well. There will always be small variations due to barrel length, powder used, variation in bullet weight, muzzle velocity, etc, that will affect how close the hash marks are to the POI. But having said that, you should be pretty spot on at least out to 500 yards with the BDC of the TA31F for M193 rounds. I am not 100% sure of the TA31RCO: I know it has windage has marks, but as for the drop....it might be based on the M855? Double check that. This would set it off a little bit more than the TA31F based BDC. It should still be pretty close though.....at least out to 400 yards. Beyond that, it will start to show the difference.

                Best of luck!

Back in 2013, I had a brand new 2013 TA11 red chevron next to a 2009 TA31 red chevron and it was nearly indistinguishable which one was brighter. For all intents and purposes, they were both bad to use at night compared to the green reticle versions.

I also much prefer the green ACOG reticles to the red. I also favor the dual illuminated over the single source.

Thanks Primary Arms for correcting my height over bore.

I re ran my calculations and I came up with new data.

Just in case anyone is curious the TA31RCOM4 is calibrated for m855 out of a 14.5'' barrel and the TA31D is calibrated for xm193 out of a 16'' barrel.
However it appears that when using the reticle's BDC in yards instead of meters the RCO is more accurate. Interesting.

There so much more to it then that.
Wrong range estimation throws everything your figuring out the window! If your target is standing sideways ranging him shoulder to shoulder is much harder then having full height ranging like ACSS, in windy conditions where to hold is another issue.. You will never remember your hold from 300-800 for a 2.5-5-7.5-10 mph wind, too much to remember under stress, the ACSS has it all built in. Movers are a reality, no one lets you shoot at them they run and take cover.. Well they run at certain speed..the ACSS leads are set for it. Trust me I have spent a lifetime trying to figure this out consulting every sniper instructor, precision shooter and anyone that knows anything to get to this point. The more you ll learn the more you ll kick your self for not grabbing the ACSS version its proven more accurate with a higher hit ratio over and over again due to more accurate ranging, wind holds and leads. Think about it at 400 in a 10mph full value wind where would you hold? How about 600 in a 5 mph? Where do you hold on a mover?

                        Here is a cool video
