Spotting Scope Hard Case: Your recommendation

I'm looking for a hard case to transport my Redfield Rampage 80mm angled spotting scope. A soft case for checked airline luggage is a recipe for disaster.

The cases I've been researching seem a bit small, or just overly large to transport the scope and tripod.

And then there is a question of reasonable quality and costs. Shelling out $400 for a scope that cost $260, seems all a bit ridiculous.

The dimensions are 16 x 7 x 6 inches, but is a bit bigger with its view-thru soft case.

What do you recommend and why?

Its a reasonable suggestion in a pinch, but I was hoping for something a bit easier for also transporting for the day trips to the range.

Consider a "carry on" size soft or semi hard size suitcase. You can get sturdy ones at Costco. They are well under $100 and will fly under the radar while riding the baggage carousel.

I lined an old plastic Craftsman tool box with egg crate foam (I don't know what it's really called) and put my Konus scope in there. It was practically free since I already owned the toolbox. They don't cost too much new either.

Pelican cases come in many sizes and there is probably one that will fit it. Some sell pretty cheap on e-bay. I got 2 for ammo before our trip to Africa. They held up fine.

Ah. I'm doing a Pelican 20"x16"-ish to fit my scope, tripod, and digiscoping mount. I already have one this size for traveling with fishing reels, so I'll see if I can buy some additional foam inserts to re-task it for the scope.

I found an Underwater Kinetics camera/instrument case at a yard sale for ten bucks about five years ago. It's a little bigger than I need as a dedicated scope case, but it fits my scope, rangefinder, and binoculars all in their original carry cases without rattling them around. Nice to have all that stuff in a single carry case when I head to the range, too.

Never hurts to keep your eyes out if you happen to pass a yard sale, it pays off occasionally.

Lots of others that are basically the same sort of hard plastic case. Google that **** yo.

I would suggest a Pelican. The odds are good that you can find a Pelican case that is close in size and custom fit your scope to the case.

Perhaps consider a double trumpet case or fluegelhorn case. Some can be had inexpensively, gutted and charcoal foamed.

There are also semi soft bags (gig bags) that might suffice. You can go as far as to get certain combination cases that vary widely in size. A quick google for double trumpet cases, trumpet/fluegelhorn cases will bring up lots of results. You may also find something on CL.

This Plano should be the right size for you and is a reasonable price.

I have several Plano containers and while they aren't SKB or Pelican, they are a good value and sufficient quality for most applications.
