Best glass

Have couple Eotech but want variable scope. I know Nikon and Leopold have good glass. Where does Vortex fit in? Retired and on a budget.

Vortex products run from entry level to pro, so it depends on which model you are looking at specifically.

Overall the PST series is quite good for the cash.

I'd also look at Primary Arms if you are budget conscious.

I've been pretty happy with Burris scopes from a budget conscious and high-quality perspective. They really are fairly good...

Vortex is good but the "best glass" will come at a huge expense. I don't personally own any Vortex products but I have looked through their Razor HD Gen 2 line. I own a number of high end optics and the Razor Gen 2's glass was very impressive. If they offered that line in black, I would buy one.

If your on a budget, I think Nikon has the best bang for the buck glass. I can't speak on durability or costumer service, but I'm sure a lot of people are satisfied with the glass on Nikon scopes, It's definitely not the best but it is more than enough, especially if your just using it at the range. Personally I hate their bdc reticle but that's just me.

Leupold vs. Vortex, I think you will be satisfied with either one to be honest. After my research from looking for a scope also, I came to my own conclusion that Leupold and Vortex scopes will pretty much be on par as long as they are around the same price range, maybe one will be very slightly better than the other but that goes for both ways. I do think Vortex has better prices though. Both have excellent costumer service and produce quality products.

I'm gonna have to agree with MrPlink, the Vortex XD (Extra Low Dispersion) Glass they offer in the PST line and also some of their other scopes is pretty awesome for the price. I had the toughest time making a decision on my first scope and just took a chance and went with a Vortex 3-12x42 Diamondback HP that comes with XD Glass for 265 bucks. I have to say, the glass was more than I expected and I am very satisfied with it.

With all this being said, and as someone who has gone through many days of hell and research to try and find the perfect scope, I don't think you will ever know what you like until your actually using it on your rifle. Everyone is going to have different opinions because, well, not everyone sees things the same way. I think you would be more than happy with a Vortex scope that has XD glass or even a Leupold, I think if you go Nikon you might want to upgrade later on.

Like everyone says, Vortex makes all levels. It goes from the cheap Chinese lines up that suck to the Razor line that is quite respectable. The worst glass is anything made in China or the third world.

Vortex PST line is fine for the 1-4x series, but their higher magnification level scopes in the PST/HST series are not very good, IMO. The razor series are very good, but they are fairly expensive. Cant beat their warranty though...

Another vote for the vortex viper 1-4. Gives you option to use it as a red dot and magnified optic. Very versatile. Great price.

Supremely satisfied with my Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32 FFP.

If you're considering a riflescope with an illuminated reticle, take a look at the warranties. Vortex is lifetime, electronics included. I like the idea of not having to buy a replacement riflescope, red dot or rangefinder.

For example, Bushnell has a 1-year warranty on their electronic components, Leupold has a 2-year warranty on their Gold Ring electronic components.

I drank the Vortex Kool-Aid when they first came out. In normal light they are fine but I've found them lacking in low light. The Vipers I had were substandard in the eye relief dept. The Razor is not that way but their is a huge jump in price over the Viper. YMMV because everyone's eyes are different. I see better out of Burris and Leupold glass than Nikon, I know people that see better through Nikon. Nikon makes a good scope and I sell a lot of them. Just because I don't see well out of a particular brand of scope doesn't mean the next guy won't.
