VCOG - wicked diopter problems

I am posting this in case it can help anyone else.

I bought two VCOGs from a reliable source. I ended up sending them back for a full refund. The problem is the diopter. If you focus it at 6x like the manual says to do, 1x is blurry.

I read that some people had this problem. Others doubted it. I thought I would take a chance. No bueno.

I also tried focusing it at 1x, 2x, 3x, and 4x. I was hoping that focusing at 3x would split the difference. It didn't.

I liked everything else about the scopes. Very disappointing.

Are you talking about the reticle being in focus or your target?

Both. I would make the reticle crisp at 6x against a light background. I was very careful to do it properly by adjusting, looking at the reticle for a second, looking away and letting my eye rest. Then, repeating the process.

After I did this, I switched to 1x. I couldn't even read the license plate on a car 20 yards away. And, the reticle was blury.

When I made the reticle clear at 1x (the image was clear also), both the reticle and the image was blury at 6X

I tried every variation I could imagine. I know the purpose of the diopter is strictly for the reticle. But, it also effected the image quality. No improvement.

That's because your scope is has no parallax control. I presume. Which means your scope's parallax is fixed. Which means your target will only be in focus past a certain distance—most likely 100 yards. So when you focus your diopter your target will only be in focus at such a distance as to put the focal plane of your reticle and the focal plane of your target at the same point in space, out to infinity.

Now, the reticle not being in focus at min and max magnification is another story. My guess is since you're trying to look at something as close as 20 yards that your eye is trying to refocus to see the out-of-focus object (because remember that you are dealing with fixed parallax), which will throw your reticle out of focus to your brain. Get out on the range at 100 yards or more and see if it still happens.

Well then I guess the scopes were broken or you were doing something wrong. If you're looking for a good 1-6x try the Kahles K16i. I have one and it's great. Cheaper than that VCOG too.

I suspect it is a design flaw. I have since found others who have seen this same problem on other boards. I love my ACOGs. They are my favorite scopes hands down. But, Trijicon has release some real turds in the past - Tripower, SRS, and now the VCOG.

I hope for their sake the MRO is better.
