Correct Position For A Red Dot Optic?

So I just got a new Aimpoint PRO optic for my rifle and am inquiring about what position I should have it in. Here is the current position.

Are you comfortable with it where it is? Do you shoot well with it where it is?

I would place it just a head of the rear sight so in case it fails you can flip up and look through but at the same time keep the weight as far back as possible. The less weight forward the less your sight picture will do the figure 8 while aiming.

When it was more rear I found that it obscured my overall visual field and I was more likely to focus solely on the sight picture within the red dot. As to comfort, I don't mind where it is at. Unfortunately, I have yet to take it to the range.

Dimitri is correct about the weight balance as well. I find putting them as forward on the receiver is the best combination of balance, stability, & field if view.

I run mine pretty far forward as well. It sits almost at the end of my upper receiver. Probably a slot or two back from my handguard. Yours sits too far forward for my liking but if it works for you rock it.

I put my EOTech as far forward on my upper receiver as possible (without touching the handguard) and haven't thought about it since. If it works for you on the handguard, more power to you. However, If there's any flex in your handguard, you may notice a change of impact. Not likely to be noticeable, but it's something to consider. Personally, I'd be more concerned about the weight forward on my support arm. Good luck!

Last rail spot on the upper...

I don't want to have hand gaurd flex messing with it. Also since I run a rmr with that stupid small window, mounting it very far forward would make it difficult to use.

This is likely not applicable to 99% to folks here, but I'll throw it out here anyway: the guys fighting at the tip of the spear discovered that placing electro-optics over the barrel eventually lead to failures due to cumulative heat build up. But, these are guys who shoot 50,000 rounds a year, so your mileage may vary.
