BUIS to use for NRA highpower competition

First, some objectives for a future AR build:

Be able to use in both 3-gun and NRA Highpower
Not worried about it being a 'service rifle'
Use irons for NRA Highpower competition
Start with iron sights and purchase an ACOG TA11 when funds permit

I'm wondering if there is a back up iron sight that is fully adjustable for both windage and elevation? It needs to be robust, either 1 or 1/2 MOA clicks, and it needs to fit under an ACOG TA11. Also, I don't want to worry about wearing it out by flipping it up and down. Does such a BUIS exist? Am I better off just getting an A2 carry handle and switching it out with the ACOG according to that weekend's shoot? Thanks.

I'm also interested. From my understanding and I can be wrong, if you want to shoot in service rifle you need an a2 upper. I hear shooting a flat top will go under the match rifle category. I may be wrong, cause I'm a newb to high power.

Do you plan on shooting Service Rifle or Match Rifle category?

If yes, then you need an A1 or A2 stock, A2 pistol grip, 4.5lb or higher trigger pull weight. You'll also need a 20 in barrel with the A2 handguards. If still yes, then you're going to either want the A2 carry handle, either fixed or detachable.

If no, meaning you want to shoot Match Rifle category, then you can pick any irons. You're only issue is making sure you have enough elevation to get from a 200 yard zero to a 600 yard zero. You'll need about 14MOA up from a 200 yard zero to get to 600 yard zero. Give or take a couple MOA given your muzzle velocity.

        Ocabj,

Thanks for the reply. I'll be falling into the 'match rifle' category, as I don't plan on making an M16A2 replica. I've shot a few of the highpower matches with my M1 Garand and did see that most everyone sports a service rifle style AR-15. I don't have the money, nor the want to own two different AR's, and so am going to build one for general plinking, 3-gun, and highpower use. I might not be too competitive in either competition, but I'll at least get more familiar with my particular rifle.

I am looking for some kind of solution to a rear iron sight. As stated, I'd like to use an ACOG on a quick detach solution such as the LaRue mount in the future. Would a fixed rear iron sight work then such as the LMT Adjustable Rear Sight? Can you detach and reattach a fixed rear sight without losing zero?

Another solution looks to be the Knights Armament flip up rear sight. It has 30 clicks of elevation adjustment which should hopefully be plenty to reach 600 yards. Anyone have experience with this particular BUIS? Thanks.

I have no experience with any of the BUIS sights. Understand that even with 30MOA of elevation adjustment, you will most likely need a front sight with elevation adjustment as well so you can set a 200 yard zero such that the rear sight has enough 'slack' left in the adjustment to get you to 600.
