Well I did it, ordered a SCAR 17. Now I’m realizing I really had no plan for optics. 100% of my shooting has been at 2 ranges in the last 2 years, 250 and 450 yard max. So I guess I don’t see any point in crazy magnification. Basically I want something that can be used at 1 power as a dot site(a feature I really want) but will reach out to 500 yards. The only thing I have kinda considered is the SWFA 1-6-24 (in the $1k range) or the Vortex Razor 1-6. Just wondering what ideas you guys have? Don’t want to spend the money on something for 500+ yards when 99% of my shooting is less than that but not looking to go cheap either . And preferably something that the SCAR isn’t going to destroy. Any thoughts?????

I'm actually in a very similar boat as you. I just built my LR308 and need something to put on it. Range wise, I'm right there with you. I probably won't be shooting past 400-600 yards. I too want something with a 1x so I can take out paper targets at 15-50 yards in a quick and fun fashion, you know, blow through some ammo just for fun.
These are the options I have come up with after through quite a few threads. I have no hands on experience with any, so I'm hoping someone else comes in and tells us about first hand experience with some of these.
a) Primary arms 1-6x scope. I want my scope made in the best way possible. If that means I pay more, that means I pay more. But I know I'm getting really good quality and not just a budget optic. So I haven't considered PA much at all.
b) Fork over the money for a SWFA 1-6 or a Vortex Razor 1-6. I like this option a lot because you aren't compromising much at all, but you are paying a little more.
c) Get a Vortex Viper PST 1-4, Leupold 1-4, SWFA 1-4, etc. I really like this option because of cost and still being able to use it as a 1x. Leaves something to be desired past 300-400 yards from everything I've read. I've also read quite a few people that don't mind it at 400 yards if they are just shooting steel.
d) Get a SWFA SS 6x or 10x and then mount a round dot at 45 degrees, on top, etc. You could go burris FF and a SWFA 6 or 10x, but you really wouldn't be saving too much money over the SWFA 1-6x. Probably wouldn't save enough to make two separate optics more appealing than a single 1-6x. Weight starts to add up some, but then again the Vortex Razor is pretty damn heavy.
e) 1-8.5 US Optics. Lots of money but I've read they are fantastic.
I'll probably end up with a 1-4x and try to master it at the 400-600 yard range, but if I'm lucky and can save up enough, I would go with a 1-6x.Comment

Scar 17:I had a serious inside bubble issue with a Leupold Mark 4 8-25.They repaired it in 3 weeks, but I had put a older Burris Signature 6-24,in the mean time.It actually works well and the reloads I make, accuracy wise warrant the high power. The 6 power is fine also.I used the returned Leupold on another application.
Scar 16:I use a 6x Valdada with the post and range marker/finder in it.Like the thing a bunch.
If I were looking today for the 17.I would be lined up on a Leupold VXR 3-9.They sell it 2-7 also. With the firedot.Comment

The new Weaver Tactical 1-7X24 could be an option worth looking into. It's a dual focal plane design, so it bypasses a lot of the compromises that are typically found in an FFP scope with a wide magnification range.
The Burris XTR II in either 1-5X24 or 1.5-8X28 would work pretty well for your application too. The 1.5-8X28 is also a dual focal plane design. The center donut stays the same size throughout the magnification range, but the ranging/holdover portion of the reticle scales up and down to stay calibrated at all magnification settings.

I'm in the same boat as you, I decided on a Vortex PST 1-4 when funds permit. I took my 17s out to West End a few weeks ago, and just threw on whatever I had in my safe & that was a Bushnell TRS25 Red Dot... that worked fine for around 100 yrds.Comment

Alright guys, if I go with the SWFA what mount would you use?
I am finding buying a scope to be a lot more difficult than buying the gun. The gun, ahhh I’ll try it, if I don’t like it I can probably sell it if I get the FDE for a small loss and I still have the M1,LR308 and FAL. Not the end of the world. The scope, well this is taking some research.Last edited by Norcalkid; 06-22-2015, 1:48 PM.Comment
