Help on scope decision for my SPR and m1a.

    Hey Calgunners,

I need help picking a scope for my m1a and SPR build. So basically I need a scope that'll work on 308 and 223 caliber. I'm going to be mainly shooting 100-400 yards and maybe once in a while for anything past that. I want to spend the most of $800"ish" for the scope alone. The scope will probably be on a larue mount (I hope they hold zero and I hope they are nice).

Can anyone give me feedback on these scopes and which one is better or give your own recommendation.

    1) Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42 Riflescope (mil-dot)
    or maybe the 4200 series?

    2) Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x50mm Long Range Target Rifle Scope (duplex reticle)

    3) Trijicon TR20-2: Trijicon AccuPoint 3-9x40, Amber Mil-Dot Crosshair

    4) Burris 3-12x50mm XTR Xtreme Tactical Illuminated

I really like the burris but I haven't found any reviews... please compare all these options and give me some feed back

Larue mounts are nice, just like the ADM mounts we sell. What diameter are the ring mounts?

You have some real apples and oranges here.

I like the Accupoint MD and Elite 6500 as good safe choices, for less money, in reasonable mag ranges. I like the "always on" aiming point of the accupoint, and the mildot for holdovers. The elite 4200 series is good also, but we've had good feedback on the 6500's.

    Avoid the Burris, IMO.

Thanks for replying....I'm new to the whole scope/optics game. I was just searching online and came across a couple that I seem to like in the price range. The elite 6500 is pretty nice...I just want something with a illuminated reticle too and I dont think the 6500 has that.

Correct. Only as couple of the Elite 4200 and none of the 6500 are illuminated. Another good choice is the Nikon Monarch X illuminated mildot.

If you're looking in that price range, save a little more and go with the Nightforce 3.5-15. Get it used and save a little. Otherwise, the Bushnell 4200 line is great. Trijicon makes a good scope as well.

a little more? the NF is around 1400! but yeah...if i ever do get to save that much more....then I would consider a higher end scope. I just want a decent one for now... Just can't seem to find the right one...

It really depends on what type of shooting you plan to do. Competitions? How far? What targets? Hunting? I often recommend getting a budget scope first and learning it well. After a few thousand rounds, you'll really know what you want in a scope and can buy accordingly.

just range shooting...maybe use it for hunting later....

i'm aiming for around 200-400 yards and rarely above that.

So I just need to figure out the magnification....and etc. What do you think?

I have a burris XTR 3-12x50 30MM tube non illum on my M1A and love this thing... Its made in the USA and has the mil-dot, stays zero all the time, has really fine adjustment and a great warranty not that you will use it..but my friend was competing in a long range match in Sacramento he had a burris XTR on his Long Range rifle and his sling broke and the rifle took all the impact on the windage turret.... He was able to finish his shoot and then he mailed his scope back to burris and fixed it for no charge! IMO the burris holds it own among all the other scopes in the price range your looking for...Check natchez they have them on sale right now

I would say a Nikon Tactical or a Leupold Tactical. I think the Leupold tacticals have turrets for both 223 and 308.

Valdada is another great company, they make a really neat little 6X42 scope that (if I had an M1A) I would seriously consider putting on it.

                          For magnification I'd say 10X.

If you're thinking of juggling one scope between two guns you might not want to, that could be a pain. I would say put a nice scope on whichever one you plan on shooting the most right now and save up for the other.

                          I have one of these:

on a .223 "tacticool" rifle and it works great. Everyone who has used it loves it. But you don't get .223 drop calibrated turrets etc.
