    Lowering magnification to maximize holdover

I have a SFP mil mil scope. The reticle is accurate at 18x. If I lower the magnification to 6x will that mean each mark will now be 3 mils instead of 1?

I figured that it would, but I was wondering if there was anything I might be overlooking.

The scope I'm using is on a 20 MOA base and has 12 mils of elevation left. The reticle allows 9 mils of holdover. I'll eventually need 40 mils of elevation. Yes, 40 mils.

    Sounds right to me.

      The math works,

however, if you are going to need 40mil of elevation/drop. You in all likelihood are going to need more magnification ... unless you are shooting subsonic 300 blackout (which probably drops 40mil in 300 yds haha,). Better option is to use your clicks to adjust for drop and get the target back on the reticle
Edit: just re-read and saw you only have 12mil left. Seems you need a different scope to effectively solve this one. a 40mil holdover is going to be pretty tough I would think.

Curious, what round and distances are you shooting?

You need less magnification at that distance than you might think.

so 6x at 2k works for you?
Man, your eyes are better than mine. I am lucky to see 12" steel plates with 15x haha. And I have never even taken a poke at anything over 1k myself.

Are you just going to stick with the current scope/scope rail? you may be able to reach your adjustment range if you get a more aggressively canted scope rail (30-40moa) and combine that with a 20moa mount.

Good luck with this, I am curious to see what you come up with.

I did some testing using google maps and a pair of 8x vortex diamondbacks. I was able to see people at 1.18 miles very clearly and a 3' wide brick chimney at 1.98 miles.

When you think about it though 3' at 2 miles is right about .3 mils wide. So that would almost give you an idea of what you could and couldn't see.

Yes, it's a linear relationship. I'd recommend using 9x since it's generally easier for people to work in halves and doubles. But, your 308 has virtually no prayer at 2,000 as it'll be tumbling if it is still in the air.

The berger juggernaut is supposed to be stable through the transition and another shooter was able to make a similar shot with 175gr SMKs. So it's doable, just not easy.

I'm waiting to hear back from berger's reps as to whether the Match Hybrid will be stable through the transition from supersonic to subsonic.

I figure it's just a target shoot, nothing to lose if I don't succeed. Maybe I'll learn something in the process. Either way I'll get to meet some cool people at the shoot, see some cool stuff.
