    VCOG crosshair reticle?

    Hey all,

    Was looking at a NIB VCOG with the crosshair reticle at a local gun shop earlier today. They only wanted $1,800.00 for it which was far lower than anything I'd seen on line. Damn near bought it but that reticle seemed really thick on 6x magnification. Was just curious if anyone around here had this particular model and could comment on it's capabilities for precision shooting?

    I played with one a while back and get the impression it's less of a precision rifle optic and more for assault/battle rifles. It fits the need for low-power variable optics with pseudo-RDS capability and the many reticle options are better geared towards quick target acquisition and BDC holdovers, not like a traditional scope. In other words I'd put one on an AR or SCAR but not a bolt gun, but that's just my opinion.

      Thanks. Yeah, that's the impression I got as well: more of a "point and shoot" combat optic (like the ACOG) than a precision scope.

      I'm actually looking to top off a fairly expensive AR build (RECCE-type) and thought the VCOG might be be able to give me the precision I think the rifle is capable of but after seeing that reticle I was somewhat disapointed. Starting to think the Leupold MK 4 is the way to go for this build.

        The Mk 4 is quite outdated, in my opinion. I remember when that product line was pretty cutting edge....20 years ago. But by the sounds of it, you'd probably be better off with something like the VCOG or a similar low-power variable with BDC. I've got run-n-gun ARs that use irons or a variety of RDS or low-power variables, but my SPR clone uses a more traditional scope along with a micro-RDS. It's not an ideal setup, but for the majority of shots I make with it, a traditional scope is more useful and the RDS is there for point and shoot targets (which almost never show up in matches I run it on).

          The name says it all:
          ACOG =Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight

          VCOG =Variable Combat Optical Gunsight

          I've heard/seen many people comparing this to precision optics and it's quite puzzling why...just saying.
