    Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24

I'm thinking of buying a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24mm with TMCQ MOA reticle. I plan on mounting the scope on top of my AK-47. My goal is to be capable of making shots out to 300 yards on hogs & coyotes.

Does anybody own one of these scopes to give me some feed back on whether they like the scope. Or perhaps recommend another similar scope in the same price range with the same features.

    Features I like:
    Illuminated reticle
    Zero stop
    MOA reticle
Also a custom turret from Kenton Industries can be made.

Last time I checked, the Viper PST 1-4x24 is not capable of day time illumination. Dusk/dawn...yes. The scope is one of the best you can buy under $600 quality-wise.
I can think of only one domestic sub $500 scope designed specifically for 7.62x39 caliber. Leatherwood Hi-Lux CMR 7.62x39. The other proven designs are all Russian.

It sounds like you are going to use your own handloads? Otherwise, the best commercial 'hunting' rounds in 7.62x39 is barely capable of 2MOA.

I have this exact scope. I really like it and have nothing really bad to say about it.

During bright daylight the illumination feature just appears to turn the reticle slightly red. You can see that it is on, but it isn't doing anything for you. The scope works just fine when turned off during the day anyways. As Caseless says, it appears to be a dusk/dawn feature, and it works great for that. I've used it for close range night shooting combined with a rail mounted light and illumination works great for that as well.

I've never used it for hunting, only for plinking. 300 yards using 4x magnification seems like a stretch to me, but perhaps you have superior skills than I (not joking).

My only other comment is 1x zoom is good for an adjustable scope, but isn't the same as running something like an Eotech with no magnification. It bugs my eyes to do both eyes open at 1x like you do with a red dot (its really close but not perfect 1x), so I always do single eye open with this scope even close range.

Stix, how is it field of view?

I'm debating on this or the new Vortex Strike Eagle for my AR.

1-4x Trijicon Accupoint TR24G (green triangle post reticle) is true 1x and just as fast as my eotech as I can pick up targets both eyes open very easily and quickly.
May be split second longer for target acquisition than Eotech but that is just because it is on a heavier AR than my Eotech is so doesn't flip around on target quite as fast. But in my opinion the TR24G is amazing reticle cause that 1x is so true and easy w both eyes open and can crank up i want to reach out a bit further.

I've got this scope and the only "negative" is the illumination, and I hesitate to even call it a negative since the reticle is fine without illumination.

I like it @1X with both eyes open, no problems.

300 yard (humane) hog shots with an AK @ 4X? That's another question entirely.

              PST is GTG.
