    need scope for 300wm

I currently have a remignton 700 in 300wm and the current scope a didnt hold up to the recoil of the 300wm. i wont name who they are as its a great scope just not meant for magnum caliber rifles. my price range is around 1000 plus or minus some. This is my first good bolt action rifle and i want to start shooting long range and go hunting with it and my future goal will be to shoot a mile. Most the ranges around me are around 600 yards.

Some different scopes im interested in are vortex viper pst 6-24, razor hd 5-20, nightforce hsv 5-25.

What mounts did you use? (On the Weatherby forum, there have been reports that recent Leupolds don't hold up to the Weatherby magnum recoils.)

No matter what scope you have, if you have two piece mounts on a receiver that twists upon recoil, you risk damaging your scope. Get a solid one piece mount or use a good tactical rail when you have a rifle that packs good recoil.

I'd look into the Burris XTR II 3-15X58 with SCR Mil reticle. The Glass on the new XTR II scopes is exceptional, and the 3-15X version has the most available internal adjustment at 110 MOA elevation. Higher magnification is tempting, especially with a cartridge like the 300 Win Mag that has the capacity to shoot well over 1000 yards. The problem with that is the increased magnification narrows the field of view and makes spotting your own rounds difficult under recoil. The exit pupil also becomes really small when going above 20X with a 50mm objective.

Don’t you think it’s helpful disclosing what didn’t hold up? It may actually help other shooters avoid the same issues you are having now if they are also shopping for an optic which may be used on something high recoil.

The choices you selected are good… I would add the SWFA 5-20 to the list as something to compare against the Razor. It’s pretty mild on features when you compare it to a PST or Razor, but an excellent scope if it’s for non-competition range use. Very strong contender in the optics and tracking department.

I have the Vortex PST 6-24 is a good scope, but it’s a bit lacking on elevation adjustment. It’s also not in the same league (optically and quality wise as the SWFA or Razor) You might want to look at your drop chart and mount to make sure you won’t run into an issue where you would run out of adjustment.

FMJBT has me interested in the Burris, but that’s primarily because it shares a lot with the Steiner scopes which also peaked my interest.

The scope was a primary arms 4-16x44 but other than not handling the recoil of the 300wm it was a great scope for what i paid for it. I emailed them about fixing the scope and they sent me an rma number the next day, their service is top notch and i will soon have another pa scope for my second ar.

i may just exchange it for their new scope and put it on my ar15 and buy a new scope for my 300wm. they were separate rings and the base rail on my 300wm is a murphy precision. http://www.murphyprecision.com/Products/Item/1015 like i said this rifle will be a starter platform and i plan on getting a new barrel for it later on once this one is shot out. i would prefer a scope with a good amount of moa so i can get out to a mile when my skills have matured enough for me to be capable of doing so.

I should also mention that the scope rail has 20 moa cant built into it as well. I will look at the scopes mentioned.

I also found this high end scope test and it seems the bushnell tactical elite might be something to look into
This is the executive summary and overall scores from an epic scope field test focused on long-range, tactical rifle scopes in the $1,500+ price range. This represents an unprecedented, data-driven approach to evaluating the best scopes money can buy. Over 400 hours have gone into this research, and the line-up and tests are built on ...

Perfect setup imo. So nice that my dad did the same setup in his mark series weatherby in .300weatherby

Swarovski Z3 4-12x50 will serve you fine. It's in the dollar ballpark you mentioned and is perfect for the caliber you are shooting.

I just picked up the Nightforce SHV 5-20x56, taking it out tomorrow. This is my second Nightforce and the glass on this one is exceptionally crisp and clear just like my NXS. I don't think you would have to question their durability.

I would say go for the Nightforce.
