detached garage

So my wife and I are looking at purchasing our a home. We have seen quite a few and are slimming down our choices. One of the homes we like has a detached garage, the rest have attached.

Would it be safe to put the safe in the garage? Anyone I've ever met always had theirs in their garage, which was attached to their house. This is one of the things I'm factoring in while looking at homes. It would get bolted down, I just don't know if it would be wise to put it out there. It seems unsafe to me. But at the same time the house doesn't have a lot of room. Especially, since we plan on having children.

Alarm systems can be rigged in the detached garage as well.
I have a couple friends that have detached garages. One has the best alarm system made....big noisy dogs!

i think it depends on the lot layout, otherwise I don't see too much of an issue.

I am assuming you have smaller pistol safes, or 1, in the house?

I have a detached garage. I don't keep my safe in there but I have probably $10k worth of tools, 3 motorcycles and a classic car. Once you move in...check out a SimpliSafe Wireless Alarm system. My house is covered and I have my garage covered as well. Tip: Put a siren in the garage too....NO ONE will stand around inside there with that thing going off....guaranteed.

Make sure you specifically cover the detached garage with insurance. Normally these are considered 'storage' areas and covered at a very small fraction of replacement value. (like 15 or 20%)

I have a detached garage with my safe bolted down. I planning to build a surround around it to disguise even more.

I love having a detached garage, it gives me a little more freedom from nagging when making noise... or foul odors

Build a cabinet for storage and the safe.
At least it will be out of sight.

That is not true for most standard home owners policies.

The detached garage would be covered under "other structures" and that is generally 10% of the dwelling coverage.
