    Volquartsen Pistol Range Bag Review

Last month (9/25/25) Volquartsen sent me an email regarding a new Product Announcement: a pistol range bag.

At $60.00 plus shipping, they’re proud of them. After emailing Volquartsen, I ordered one. I like the design, but the build quality is not up to the Volquartsen Name.

I like the seven (7) exterior pistol pouches, and the two (2) accessory pouches on the opposite side. I have a couple of Boyt Pistol cases that have exterior magazine and accessory pouches. Really handy feature. However, the Boyt cases are really a bit small for optic equipped pistols. Compared to the Boyt cases, the Volquartsen case is giant. To be fair, the Boyt pistol case is marketed as a “case” whereas the Volquartsen product is marketed as a “Range Bag”. Nonetheless, the Volquartsen product lacks a shoulder strap, and is similar to a small nylon briefcase. It strikes me as an extra large pistol case. If you look at the magazine pouch flap, they put 4 magnets in the flap, and 4 more in the bag. That keeps the flap in place. Gimmicks don’t impress me. It’s kind of different, and I’m trying to keep an open mind.

What I don’t like about the Volquartsen Pistol case is the overall build quality. Loose and unraveling threads concern me. It also seems a bit under built. Lite weight. Flimsy. The photos don’t do justice to the poor sewing. Country of origin isn’t disclosed. Volquartsen mentions that this case is a collaboration with 221B Tactical. I’m guessing this came from China. If it was a USA product they would be waving that flag.

All in all, I like the design! It’s a little large for your average pistol or target pistol, but there’s plenty of room for optics. I am disappointed with the build quality, and I would not buy it again. Perhaps my expectations are too high, but with the Volquartsen Name (and Price) I expected more. I have an assortment of Volquartsen Trigger Kits in every iteration of Ruger MK Pistol that has been made. 10/22 hammer kits, LCI filler kits, magazine base plates, you name it, I probably have it. I even shipped them the upper half of an MK2 to be drilled and taped for a scope base. I basically have confidence in Volquartsen in regards to parts and services, but these range bags are an outsourced item.

EDIT: YES I let Volquartsen and 221B Tactical know the sewing on this is crap.
EDIT 11/12/25: Here’s a thread comparing Tandemkross to Volquartsen. https://www.calguns.net/forum/firear...n-pistol-cases

Attached is a photo of the Boyt Pistol cases that I mentioned in my initial post. They’re made of a really thick and heavy canvass fabric. I like that they have four (4) pouches for magazines. I can put 3 magazines (.22LR) in each pouch. I like that they’re about $30.00. Yes, there’s two different sizes in the photo. Unfortunately, optic equipped pistols are a really tight fit in the larger case. I don’t like that these are made in China. They also seem to be somewhat porous. Get a little dust or dirt on them, and I’m not sure it can be cleaned? Still, the Boyt pistol rigs are my favorite. Please Ignore the NRA marked case in the back. That was given to me, and I don’t have much to say about it.

TandemKross range bags are similar,of equal quality and are only $29.99 which is half the price of the Volquartsen product.

Yes I believe you are correct. The design looks identical too. I’ll order a Tandemkross version as soon as Brownells has them in stock. If anyone out there has a Tandemkross case, please feel free to post photos, and give us a review. Scott at Volquartsen did read this post, and emailed me to say these are not made in China. Scott didn’t say “where” they’re made. I guess it’s company secrets? Regardless, they’ve damaged their credibility, which erodes my brand loyalty.
