    Handgun Lock question.

Greetings, I purchased many handguns and never had an issue regarding locks.

All firearms I purchased are California roster approved and come with an OEM lock. I went to go pick up my recent purchase that had an OEM lock and key in the box with it. However there was no "paperwork" regarding the lock so (Store name hidden to prevent bad blood) said I couldn't take it home without purchasing one of their locks.

One employee was reminded of a thread on calguns but was immediately shut down by another employee "That doesn't mean anything. If you take this lock we will get investigated and lose our license."

I didn't want to cause any type of stirrup so I purchased one of their locks and left the store.

I reviewed all other 7 CA compliant locks I had and none of them had a "California Code." The auto ordnance 1911 was the only one that had a little piece of paper with it describing proper use of a handgun lock.

Are these OEM locks that I have "illegal" to use because they don't have a CA Code on it? I always thought I could even use my own locks if the firearm didn't come with one (never needed to as this was never an issue).

Before I'd accept a store's assertion that an OEM included lock was not CA approved, I'd expect them to have a printed copy of the approved safety devices where they could show me and the DOJ auditors that indeed that particular lock is not on the list.

You don't have to use the locks, ever. A seller has to be sure you have one before you can leave with your gun, and there are regs on that lock being CA-approved and purchased within the 30 days prior to delivery.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

I see, must be a commission thing. Damn.

I just didn't want to cause a ruckus as they are one of the biggest firearms dealers in so cal.

        ...
Although most manufacturers do provide CA approved locks nowadays, some (Kahr comes to mind) don't. The locks are really unidentifiable and can't be shown to NOT be CA approved.
