safe built in closet = walk-in gunsafe

The liberals in SF would **** their pants if they found out that you were building a walk in gun safe in your house

I'm sure that they'd pass a law to disallow it as well. Make sure to keep it quiet.

Here's what i think, for what its worth;
build/buy a rinky dink door, that appears that you put everything you had into it,
buy a few hundred bucks worth of worthless guns, but polsih em up real good
conveniently forget to secure the wall.
show it off.

at night, under cover of darkness.
build a fake wall, on the edge that is against the side of mountain.
dig out a new room in the side of the mountain, bracing it with i-beams, and make a wall of whatever thickness steel you feel best with, I have no clue how to do the fire resistant part.
get you a real safe door of whatever style you desire, put in place, then cover it with your fake door and your fake safe.

I would line the closet with 3/4" plywood and Install a steel door and frame.

Unless someone knows what they are looking for they will likely NOT have the tools necessary to get in.

I also like the idea of a false shelf or wall in front of the door.

A safe, or something like this.............with a safe in it to be sure.

I am moving to an old house in SF. There is a closet I could modify to be a walk-in gunsafe. I need to find a way to close and lock the 59" wide opening that leaves room for a decorative false door in front. Does anyone have some experience to share in the area of building a safe out of an existing closet?

I have thought about using a metal roll-up door or just putting in solid wood double doors with appropriate locks. All experience, ideas, and other thoughts welcome.

All you need to do is reinforce the false book case, frame, wall. Put all your wife's books on there then nobody would even suspect it.
