Springfield XD locks

Has anyone noticed that any springfield lock key will open ANY springfield lock?



Over the course of the last 4 years three friends have purchased XD's - (1) .XD40 (1) XD9 subcompact and (1) XD .45 - each purchase was made at least a year apart from the other but we found that each of our lock keys would open each of the other locks. Meaning, my key would open both of the other locks without a problem and vice-versa.

I'm sure this is something that has to be done to save the company a bit of money since they put one of these in each of the cases as a stock product but, don't you all think that there should be a notice given to anyone that makes a purchase like this and assumes that when locked that it is somewhat safe? Anyone have thoughts about this? Am I letting the cat out of the bag on this or is this something that was "known"?

I dont consider any gun to be secure, unless it is in my safe.
Then..... it is still possible for someone to eventually get in it.
If this is your only means of protection to keep your kids or someone from stealing it, I would invest in a safe. Just my opinion,

as a locksmith i have absolutely no suprise by this. they probably bought one key for all in case someone calls up saying they lost a ket tehy dnt have to play the guessing game.

they have no obligation to say anything about them being keyed alike. out of how many XD's sold how many do you tihnk realized this. not enough to make springfield concerned. because if they are going to steal your hand gun they are just going to take a pair of bolt cutters to the shackle. hell i wouldnt b e suprised if that is the exact same lock that came with my RIA 1911 just painted different.

I can understand where you're coming from but I was only trying to see if anyone else had been aware of this particular issue. I don't have kids so that's not a worry for me at this time I just thought it was pretty odd that the same exact lock and key was being given out to every single customer. I personally keep mine locked with a master-lock in a waterproof hard case and not the stock plastic thing that was given to me.
